According to preliminary statistics released by the Customs Department, in April, Vietnam spent over $1.5 billion on imports from the US, a nearly 40.2% increase compared to the same period last year. In the first four months of this year, the import turnover of US goods reached $5.6 billion, up by 25.8%.

Notably, several key import categories from the US witnessed double-digit growth. A typical example is the group of computer, electronic products, and components, for which Vietnam spent $1.8 billion, marking a 44.5% increase from the previous year. This is the largest import category from the US, accounting for approximately 32.5% of total imports from the country. The significant increase in imports of this category reflects the expanding demand for high-tech parks and electronic assembly activities.

In terms of cotton imports, Vietnam spent $444.6 million on US products in the first four months of this year, a 27% increase. Plastic raw materials reached $346 million, up by 43.5%; soybeans attained $414 million, a 47.3% increase; and animal feed reached $427 million, a 0.7% rise.

Particularly, Vietnam also imported nearly $203 million worth of fruits and vegetables from the US, a substantial 55.6% increase. The surge in imports of US fruits and vegetables is attributed to Vietnam’s relaxed plant quarantine policies and market access for products like grapes, cherries, and Gala apples from the US.

Additionally, Vietnam has increased imports of pharmaceuticals ($42 million, up by 50%), various types of steel and iron products ($72 million, a 20% increase), and other goods.

Recently, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, who led the government negotiation team, chaired a meeting with large Vietnamese corporations, companies, and enterprises. During the meeting, Minister Dien affirmed that Vietnam has a substantial demand for purchasing goods, equipment, and services from the US, involving large quantities, high values, and stability. Specific categories include aircraft, turbines for gas-powered plants, power transmission systems, GPU chips, and more. These are areas where the US has strengths and Vietnam has needs.

However, according to Minister Dien, the trade between the two countries has not yet fully tapped into their potential. Therefore, he urged enterprises to take more proactive measures to materialize this immense potential in the coming time.

“This is a practical action to promote substantive, in-depth, and efficient economic, trade, and investment cooperation between the two countries, while also contributing to a harmonious and sustainable trade balance,” Minister Nguyen Hong Dien stated.
