Vietjet and Qazaq Air’s Strategic Partnership
On May 6th, Vietjet and Qazaq Air announced their strategic collaboration, preparing for the launch of Vietjet Qazaqstan Airlines. Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance has granted Aviation Holdings, a subsidiary of Vietjet, owned by billionaire Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, foreign investment certification to proceed with the acquisition of a strategic stake in Qazaq Air.
As per the partnership agreement, the two airlines will jointly develop and operate Vietjet Qazaqstan, previously known as Qazaq Air. The new airline, Vietjet Qazaqstan, is envisioned as a next-generation, low-cost carrier, serving as a strategic aviation bridge between Kazakhstan, Vietnam, Southeast Asia, and key international aviation hubs.
Vietjet Qazaqstan is expected to operate a fleet of at least 20 Boeing 737 aircraft, expanding its domestic and international network. This expansion follows the success of Thai Vietjet Air, which currently holds a significant domestic market share in Thailand.
Thai Vietjet Air, a subsidiary of Vietjet with a 9% stake as of December 31, 2024, commenced commercial passenger flights in November 2014, connecting Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport with Da Nang, Vietnam. It has since expanded its network to cover both domestic Thai destinations and international locations, including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and more.
Thai Vietjet Air boasts a significant domestic market share in Thailand.
As of 2023, Thai Vietjet Air transported over 8.6 million passengers, a figure that rose to 9.5 million in 2022. With a strong focus on punctuality, the airline consistently achieves top rankings in on-time performance within the Thai market.
The Thai aviation market is served by six airlines, including full-service carriers and low-cost competitors. Thai AirAsia leads the domestic market with a 36.9% share, followed by Nok Air, Thai VietJet Air, and others. This strategic partnership between Vietjet and Qazaq Air aims to replicate and build upon the success of Thai Vietjet Air, offering efficient and affordable travel options to passengers.
