In recent times, the area along the Red River in Phong Van Commune, Ba Vi District, Hanoi, has experienced severe riverbank erosion, affecting several residential buildings with numerous cracks appearing.

According to the People’s Committee of Phong Van Commune, the number of houses with cracked walls and floors has been increasing rapidly since the end of 2023. These houses are concentrated in Xom Bai, located along the riverbank where the Red River, Da River, and Thao River converge.

“Despite our efforts to repair the cracks with cement, they continue to widen, causing us anxiety and fear that our houses may collapse at any moment,” shared Mr. Ngo Xuan Hieu, a resident of Phong Van Commune, regarding the situation that has persisted for over a year following the sand extraction that led to the riverbank erosion.

Numerous deep cracks extend from the courtyard into the houses. The cracks run along the foundation and main support columns, leaving the residents in constant worry and fear.

Several families have relocated to ensure their safety.

Not far from Mr. Hieu’s house lives 85-year-old Mr. Ngo Van Biet, whose house has also developed multiple cracks. “I live alone, so despite the cracks, I continue to stay here. During last year’s rainy season, my grandchildren would take me to a safer place whenever there was heavy rain and strong winds. With the upcoming rainy season, I don’t know if this house will be able to withstand it,” Mr. Biet shared emotionally.

The impact is not limited to residential buildings; the protective dike and road system in the area have also sustained large cracks.

Thus far, according to statistics from the People’s Committee of Phong Van Commune, 47 households along the Red River have been affected by cracks, and the damaged riverbank section has not been reinforced even after a year.
