On May 8th, durian prices in the Mekong Delta and Southeast regions of Vietnam were announced to range from 50,000-53,000 VND/kg for grade A, 35,000-38,000 VND/kg for grade B, and grades C and D at 25,000-28,000 VND/kg for the Ri 6 variety, a decrease of about 2,000 VND/kg from a few days prior.
Durian grades of Monthong (Thai and Dona varieties) were priced at 70,000 VND/kg for grade A, 50,000 VND/kg for grade B, and 35,000-37,000 VND/kg for grade C.
Bulk purchases of durian directly from farms vary in price depending on quality, with Ri 6 ranging from 30,000-35,000 VND/kg and Monthong at 50,000 VND/kg.

A social media user advertises “rescue durians” at 70,000 VND/kg for the Monthong variety.
Social media platforms have seen an increase in users selling durian from their own farms, guaranteeing no chemical usage and tree-ripened fruit. These durians are typically priced at 70,000-80,000 VND/kg, with some sellers even using the term “durian rescue” in their posts.
However, according to many consumers, even at 70,000 VND/kg for the whole fruit, the price equates to more than 200,000 VND/kg for the durian flesh, which is still considered expensive for many.

Frozen durian provides an alternative market, but prices cannot compete with fresh fruit.
Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tung, Chairman of Vina T&T and Vice President of the Vietnam Vegetables and Fruits Association, confirmed that durian prices this year are about 50% lower than the same period last year due to difficult consumption.
However, Mr. Tung also stated that at the farmgate price of 35,000 VND/kg, farmers can still make a profit, although it is significantly less than in previous years.
The main reason for this situation is the difficulty in exporting to China, prolonged customs clearance times, and low market demand.
Businesses are currently increasing their purchases of durian for freezing and exporting to other markets, but the Chinese market is so large that it cannot be compensated for.
Additionally, the price of frozen durian cannot compete with that of fresh fruit.
Regarding the long-term future of the durian market, Mr. Tung stated that it is difficult to predict as it largely depends on the Chinese market.
