“Vietnam’s Seafood Exports to China Surge by 60% in the First Four Months of 2025”
According to Vietnam Customs, the country’s seafood exports to China reached an impressive $640.7 million in the first four months of 2025, marking a significant 60% increase compared to the same period in 2024. With this surge, China has overtaken the United States ($532 million) to become Vietnam’s largest seafood export market.
The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reported that China has increased its imports of various Vietnamese seafood products in the initial months of this year.
Notably, in the first quarter of 2025, China (including Hong Kong) spent over $23 million on importing Vietnamese mollusks, a staggering 2,000% rise year-on-year.
Consequently, Vietnam’s total export turnover for this seafood category soared to $63 million, reflecting a 109% growth rate compared to the previous year’s first quarter.
In terms of market share, China accounted for only 4% of Vietnam’s mollusk export turnover in the first quarter of 2024, but this figure surged to 37% in the same period in 2025. This surpasses other significant markets such as the EU with $18 million and the US with over $6 million.

VASEP attributes this shift to the decreasing dominance of traditional markets like the EU due to heightened competition and stricter regulations. In contrast, China has emerged as a strategic market with its massive consumption scale and flexible import standards.
The Chinese market, with its billion-strong population, offers a diverse range of consumption channels, from supermarkets to wholesale markets. Currently, China primarily imports ark shells, clams, and abalones from Vietnam. Among these, live ark shells dominate with nearly $16 million in exports, followed by live clams at almost $5 million, and the remainder being frozen abalones.
This import structure reflects the growing preference of Chinese consumers for high-quality fresh and frozen seafood products. This trend presents a significant advantage for Vietnamese mollusk producers and processors aiming to expand their market share in this promising market.
The Truth Behind Vietnam’s Durian Losing its ‘Throne’
Despite being touted as the billion-dollar industry for Vietnamese agriculture, durian exports have only achieved 20% of the target since the beginning of the year. This situation not only impacts the overall goals of the industry but also leads to a significant dip in the domestic market value of durians.
