Faced with the potential of a 46% retaliatory tariff, the Vietnamese government and relevant ministries have taken proactive measures, engaging in active consultations and negotiations with the US to find common ground, benefiting producers, businesses, and consumers in both countries.

Minister Do Duc Duy shared that the ministry has developed multiple scenarios and issued a proposal to boost exports to the US. The proposal emphasizes key elements such as supply chain transparency and raw material region traceability, digital technology application for origin tracing and quality control, and industry brand building based on compliance and sustainability.

Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that the US is a significant market for Vietnam’s agricultural, forestry, and aquatic product exports and also offers substantial potential for the import of cereals, meat, dairy, and timber products.

The Minister of Industry and Trade highlighted that importing agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products from the US would not only bring short-term benefits by catering to the consumption preferences of both countries, contributing to trade balance, and facilitating positive negotiation outcomes, but also lay a foundation for Vietnam and the US to collaborate more closely in these sectors toward high technology, circularity, and sustainability.

To increase bilateral trade in these sectors, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien suggested that the governments and relevant ministries of both countries promptly remove trade barriers and introduce strong and feasible incentive policies (such as tax, capital preferences, and logistics support) to encourage businesses and drive growth.

The Minister of Industry and Trade also urged enterprises and industry associations in the field of agricultural, forestry, and aquatic product import and export to proactively connect with US partners to explore increased import opportunities from this market.

The Vietnamese government, ministries, and particularly the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, are committed to accompanying enterprises in these endeavors.

“First and foremost, we will work swiftly and decisively to remove technical barriers, open doors for US agricultural, forestry, and aquatic products, and streamline administrative procedures to enable enterprises and industry associations to enhance trade with this market,” said Minister Nguyen Hong Dien.
