As summer approaches, millions of families plan their vacations or extended trips back to their hometowns. While you’re away, some household appliances silently guzzle energy, even when they’re turned off.
According to Daniel Mock, Executive Vice President of the household electrical appliance company Mister Sparky (USA), an average household can waste up to 35% of their annual energy, mostly due to unused appliances that silently consume power.
Many believe that only large appliances like air conditioners and refrigerators are energy guzzlers. However, in reality, size doesn’t determine energy consumption. Some small, seemingly harmless appliances are the culprits behind soaring electricity bills, especially when you’re away from home.
Here are four types of appliances that experts advise unplugging completely when not in use, especially during summer getaways:
Kitchen Appliances:
Appliances like electric kettles, air fryers, toasters, and induction cooktops are often permanently placed on kitchen counters, even when not in use. Clement Feng, Vice President of Briggs & Stratton Energy Solutions, points out that “many modern kitchen appliances are equipped with digital displays or heat retention features. Even when turned off, these components silently consume energy.” His advice is to get into the habit of unplugging or storing away unnecessary appliances before every trip to avoid wasteful energy consumption.
Smart Devices & Entertainment Systems:
From smart speakers and central hubs to phone chargers, TVs, signal receivers, and Wi-Fi modems, many modern electronic devices never truly “sleep.” Glenn Lewis, President of Mr. Appliance, shares a simple tip to identify these energy thieves: “Try placing your hand on the surface of the device after you’ve turned it off. If it still feels warm, it’s still consuming energy.” So, before embarking on a long trip, don’t forget to unplug all smart devices and entertainment systems that aren’t essential during your absence.
Lighting:
Leaving the lights on for extended periods, even when no one is home, is a common wasteful habit. Bill Taylor, HVAC Contractor Director at South Jersey Gas (USA), emphasizes that “developing the habit of turning off the lights when you leave a room will not only save energy daily but also significantly impact your monthly electricity bill.” Before every trip, take the time to thoroughly check all light sockets, decorative lights, and even motion sensor lights, ensuring they’re completely unplugged.
Many people keep fans or air purifiers running continuously, even when no one is home. This habit wastes energy and reduces the lifespan of these appliances. Daniel Mock stresses, “There’s no need to cool or purify air in an empty room. If you’re going away for an extended period, unplug these appliances entirely.”
