The Ministry of Construction has issued a decision to reorganize the Steering Committee for the preparation of the Long Thanh International Airport’s operation. Deputy Minister of Construction, Le Anh Tuan, will take on the role of Director.

The Steering Committee includes representatives from the People’s Committee of Dong Nai province and relevant units from the Ministry of Construction, Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Public Security, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, and the Ministry of Finance. It also comprises enterprises in the aviation industry, such as the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation, Vietnam Airlines, and VietJet.

Mr. Uong Viet Dung, Director of the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam, will act as the Standing Vice Director of the Committee, while Mr. Nguyen Tien Viet, Deputy General Director of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), will serve as the Vice Director.

The Committee is responsible for coordinating inter-sectoral efforts and overseeing the overall preparation for the airport’s operation. This includes directing operational trials, ensuring a smooth and efficient transition to operations, and addressing any challenges that may arise during this process.

Additionally, the Committee is tasked with resolving issues between relevant agencies and units, monitoring progress and timelines, and proposing solutions to challenges beyond their authority to the Long Thanh Project Working Group and authorized agencies for consideration and resolution.

Earlier, at the April work conference and the deployment of tasks for May 2025, the Minister of Construction, Mr. Tran Hong Minh, instructed the investor to focus resources and closely monitor each item to ensure the basic completion of the Long Thanh International Airport project by the end of 2025.

A Race Against Time: Construction Sprint at Long Thanh International Airport

In the middle of May, over 10,000 engineers and workers braved the scorching heat and heavy rains to work tirelessly on the Long Thanh International Airport project in Dong Nai province. They are determined to meet the government’s deadline, with basic construction expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

Spanning an area of more than 5,000 hectares, the bustling worksite of Long Thanh International Airport resonates with the sound of machinery. Of particular note is Package 5.10, the passenger terminal, often referred to as the “heart” of the project. This critical component, which determines the project’s overall success, is ahead of schedule by several months. It is currently undergoing intense construction to create a world-class international airport.

From a distance, the terminal’s giant lotus-shaped roof is taking shape, standing out impressively in the vast landscape. Approximately 5,000 engineers and workers, supported by hundreds of machines, work around the clock in three shifts, including night shifts, to meet the tight deadline.

The terminal’s roof is nearing completion, and workers are now focusing on the central roof area of PT1, PT2, and PT3 sections. The installation of skylights is expected to be completed in the coming days.

In addition to the terminal, several other critical auxiliary projects are also being expedited. Package 4.6, pertaining to the runway, taxiways, and aircraft parking aprons, is almost finished, with workers completing the remaining items. Other packages, such as Package 4.7 for the aircraft parking apron at the terminal, Package 4.8 for internal port roads, and Package 4.9 for the fuel supply system, are all being aggressively implemented.

Connectivity is another crucial aspect. The route connecting National Highway 51 to the airport gate has been technically opened to traffic, while Package T2 continues work on the remaining sections, expected to be completed by September this year.

With a total investment of up to VND 336,630 billion (equivalent to US$16.3 billion), the Long Thanh International Airport project is one of the largest and most extensive infrastructure projects in Vietnam. It is divided into three phases, with the first phase starting in 2021 and expected to be operational by 2026, serving 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually.

Once fully completed, the airport will have four runways, four passenger terminals, and synchronous auxiliary items, serving 100 million passengers and five million tons of cargo per year.

With the unwavering dedication and relentless efforts of the engineers and workers, the Long Thanh International Airport is poised to become a pivotal infrastructure project. It will not only transform the face of Vietnam’s aviation industry but also drive economic development in the Southeast region and the entire country, establishing Vietnam as a global aviation hub.
