Preliminary statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs indicate that wheat imports to Vietnam in April reached over 776,000 tons, valued at more than $208 million. From the beginning of the year, the country has imported over 2.4 million tons of wheat, with a turnover of more than $638 million, an increase of 4.7% in volume but a slight decrease in value compared to the same period last year. Import prices fell by 4.5% over the same period.

In the first four months of 2025, Brazil was the largest supplier of wheat to Vietnam, with over 989,000 tons, valued at more than $254 million, an increase of 4.4% in volume and 7.3% in value compared to the same period last year. Import prices rose by over 2% compared to the same period.

Australia and Canada were the next largest markets.

Notably, the US is also an emerging import market for the month. The volume of wheat imports from the US to Vietnam reached over 163,029 tons, valued at more than $45.3 million, an increase of 9% in volume but a decrease of 7.6% in value compared to the same period. The average price was $277 per ton, a decrease of 15%. In April alone, both volume and import value from the US increased by over 100%.

Wheat is one of the essential food sources and is the most consumed grain globally. According to the Livestock Association, wheat is the primary grain used in mixed animal feed production. This product not only serves domestic consumption needs but also meets the growing export demand. However, as Vietnam cannot cultivate wheat, its supply is entirely dependent on imports. Vietnam is currently one of the top ten wheat importers in the world.

After the US planned to impose taxes on various countries worldwide, Decree No. 101/2021/NĐ-CP reduced the MFN import tax rate for wheat from 3% to 0% to support the domestic livestock industry amid rising raw material prices.

The above figures demonstrate Vietnam’s clear intention to increase purchases from the US in 2025. Vietnam is willing to negotiate with the US to reduce import taxes on goods from the US to 0% and requests that the US apply the same tax rate to imports from Vietnam.

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), global wheat production in 2025 is expected to reach 796 million tons, a slight increase of about 1% from the previous year. Notably, the US – one of the key suppliers – is projected to produce 50.56 million tons in the new crop year, a 2.5% increase from the current level.

Earlier, the US’s top buyer, China, canceled a shipment of 240,000 tons of soft red winter (SRW) wheat. About a week later, another shipment of 264,000 tons was canceled. US exporters had to choose to retain half a million tons or find alternative buyers. This situation made Vietnam a potential customer.

The domestic livestock industry is expected to recover strongly, thanks to stable and reasonably priced raw materials. According to VNDirect’s report, 2025 will witness significant growth in consuming products such as animal feed, asphalt, and plastic pipes, which will drive up the demand for wheat and grains.
