Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm is a city with a unique distinction in Vietnam – it has the longest name in the country with 4 words and 16 characters. This beautiful city is located in the coastal region of South-Central Vietnam and serves as the political, economic, cultural, and scientific-technical center of Ninh Thuan Province. With a population of approximately 161,150 people, it covers an area of 79.38 km2 and comprises 16 administrative units, including 15 wards and 1 commune.
Strategically located at the intersection of National Highway 1A and National Highway 27 to Dalat, Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm is a vital transportation hub. The city is also conveniently connected to the North-South railway line via the Tháp Chàm station, making it ideal for passenger and cargo transportation by road and rail. Its proximity to major transport links is advantageous; it is 60km from Cam Ranh international port and airport, 100km north of Nha Trang City, 350km south of Ho Chi Minh City, and 110km west of Dalat, forming a development triangle with these cities.
The history of the city’s name is fascinating. Phan Rang originates from the ancient Cham name, Pangdarang or Pandaran. The combined name, Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm, was officially adopted in 1948 by the revolutionary government of the province. In February 2015, the city was recognized as a class-2 city directly under the authority of Ninh Thuan Province by the Prime Minister’s Decision.

However, with the upcoming reorganization of local government to a two-tier model, provinces and their equivalent units will cease to exist. The streamlined model will comprise only the central government, provinces/centrally-controlled cities, and communes/wards/special districts. This means that Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm will no longer be recognized as a city under the province’s authority.
The Introduction of Phan Rang Ward
In late April, the Executive Committee of the Ninh Thuan Provincial Party Committee agreed on a new name following the rearrangement of communal-level administrative units and the consolidation of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan provinces. Initially, Ninh Thuan proposed naming the 24 new wards and communes by combining numbers with the existing names of districts and cities. However, after considering the feedback from the local population, they decided to name these new units after historical, cultural, and traditional landmarks of the region.
This decision has been met with overwhelming support and agreement from the people of Ninh Thuan Province. As a result of the reorganization, Kinh Dinh, Phu Ha, Dai Son, and Dao Long wards will merge to form Phan Rang Ward. Additionally, My Binh, My Dong, My Hai, and a portion of Dong Hai will unite to establish Dong Hai Ward. Meanwhile, Van Hai Ward (in Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm City) and Khanh Hai township (in Ninh Hai district) will be renamed Ninh Chu Ward.
Furthermore, Phuoc My, Bao An, and Thanh Hai will merge to form Bao An Ward, and Do Vinh Ward (in Phan Rang-Tháp Chàm City) and Nhon Son commune (in Ninh Son district) will be renamed Do Vinh Ward. With these changes, the name Phan Rang will live on as a new ward in Ninh Thuan Province.
Looking ahead, the draft proposal for arranging provincial-level administrative units in the new Khanh Hoa Province (following the merger of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan) indicates that the province will cover an area of over 8,555 km2, with a population of over 2.2 million people and 64 administrative units, including 48 communes, 15 wards, and 1 special district. The political and administrative center of the new Khanh Hoa Province will be located in the current center of Khanh Hoa.
