According to News1, the first trial of actress Hwang Jung Eum (age 41) on charges of embezzlement under the Act on Special Cases Concerning the Punishment of Economic Crimes took place at Jeju District Court on May 15.
Per the indictment, in early 2022, Hwang Jung Eum received 700 million won as an advance from her company’s loan funds to invest in cryptocurrencies. By December of that year, the total amount she was accused of embezzling from the company had reached over 4.34 billion won (approximately 7.7 billion VND).

It is understood that the embezzled company is a family business wholly owned by Hwang Jung Eum. During the trial, the actress, famous for her role in the drama Family Number One, admitted to all the prosecution’s charges.
Hwang Jung Eum’s lawyer stated in court: “We do not dispute the charges. However, the defendant invested in virtual currency with the intention of developing the company. As a legal entity is not allowed to own virtual currency, she temporarily made the investment in her personal name, which has led to the current criminal act.”
The lawyer also added: “The company’s profits mostly come from the defendant’s artistic activities, so essentially, the money would have come back to her. She has already sold a portion of her virtual currency assets to repay part of the damage and is planning to sell real estate to compensate for the rest. We ask the court to consider the motive for the crime when sentencing.”
Hwang Jung Eum’s side has requested a postponement of the trial to have more time to rectify the situation, which the court has approved.
