Not One-Size-Fits-All, but Tailored Solutions

In a recent interview with Automotive News, President Akio Toyoda shared: “When the term carbon neutrality became popular, we said the enemy is carbon. We have to focus on what we can do immediately to reduce CO2. That is the basis for our decision. This will never change.”

The world’s best-selling automotive brand has repeatedly emphasized that there are multiple paths to the goal of carbon neutrality. Alongside self-charging hybrids, plug-in hybrids, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles, battery electric vehicles, and even internal combustion engines running on synthetic fuels, are all solutions to reduce CO2 emissions. In each market, based on the prevailing developmental conditions, including infrastructure, the Japanese automaker will select the most suitable solutions.

Demand for hybrids has surged in some countries over the past years.

The head of the Japanese automaker also revealed that Toyota has sold approximately 27 million hybrid vehicles, impacting the environment equivalently to 9 million battery electric vehicles (BEVs). However, if those 9 million BEVs were manufactured in Japan, CO2 emissions would increase due to the environmental impact of producing electric vehicles and generating electricity to charge them, which is a more complex story. That’s why hybrids remain a practical and globally-embraced green solution.

Mr. David Christ, Director of Sales and Marketing for Toyota in North America, stated that the demand for hybrid vehicles exceeds the company’s supply capacity. Hybrid sales also contribute to the growth picture of the US automotive market. According to Wards Intelligence, new vehicle sales reached 15.9 million units last year, up 2.2% from the previous year, marking the highest level since 2019.

Impressive Growth of Toyota Hybrid Sales in Vietnam

With a breakthrough and impressive growth from 2024 to the present, Toyota has proven that its efforts to develop the hybrid vehicle line in the Vietnamese market are correct. This is the result of thorough preparation, market research, and consideration of infrastructure conditions. In the context of infrastructure development requiring time to complete, hybrid vehicles are an appropriate solution to immediately reduce CO2 emissions.

Toyota Hybrid suits Vietnamese traffic conditions.

Toyota Vietnam representative shared that the company has a 28-year history of developing this line globally and nearly 5 years in Vietnam. As a pioneer brand in technology, Toyota Hybrid models are increasingly loved in Vietnam. This is evident as sales in 2024 reached 5,350 units, doubling the previous year. In 2025, Toyota Hybrid continued to record positive growth. In April alone, Toyota Hybrid sales reached 600 units, up 288% over the same period last year, and was the highest month since the beginning of the year, bringing the total to nearly 16,000 units.

Among them, Innova Cross Hybrid and Corolla Cross Hybrid remain the sales highlights for the Japanese automaker. Toyota meets the diverse needs of Vietnamese customers by offering hybrid versions across sedan, SUV, and MPV models, from medium to high-end segments. The growing sales month after month show that the majority of Vietnamese people are no longer hesitant about this green mobility technology.

Toyota Hybrid is fuel-efficient even when traveling on hilly terrain.

The development of Toyota Hybrid is also an “inspiration” for many other automakers to introduce their hybrid models in Vietnam. However, with its extensive experience in developing gasoline-electric technology and providing full hybrid (self-charging hybrid) configurations that are independent of infrastructure, offering over 50% fuel savings compared to gasoline versions of the same model, equivalent maintenance, and a warranty of up to 7 years or 150,000 km (whichever comes first), Toyota still holds the upper hand in Vietnam’s hybrid game.

The Toyota Caravan journey, which conquered the four extreme points of West, North, East, and South on a real-life distance of over 5,500 km earlier this year, proved the durability, strength, fuel economy, and environmental friendliness of the hybrid line. The gasoline-electric combination mechanism delivered an exciting driving experience, transforming into a true electric car when starting, accelerating, or moving in urban areas. Even when traveling on mountainous roads from Vinh Phuc to Dien Bien, Camry Hybrid, Yaris Cross Hybrid, and Corolla Cross Hybrid still achieved ideal fuel consumption, with rates of 4.5L/100km, 3.9L/100km, and 4.6L/100km, respectively. In addition, as the highest-end versions of their respective lines, Toyota Hybrid models are equipped with a range of advanced convenience features and the Toyota Safety Sense advanced safety package, enhancing the overall experience for users.
