Haiphong recently inaugurated the International Container Terminals 3 and 4 at Lach Huyen Port – Haiphong Port. This project was approved by the Prime Minister in 2019 and is invested by Haiphong Port Joint Stock Company with a capital of VND 6,946 billion.
This is a key project of great importance not only to the Vietnam Maritime Corporation and Haiphong Port but also to the socio-economic development of Haiphong and the Northern Key Economic Region.
The project consists of two berths with a total length of 750 meters and a depth of -16 meters, capable of accommodating mother ships of up to 165,000 DWT (14,000 TEUs) and 200,000 DWT when reduced, along with a barge berth and modern cargo handling equipment.
Notably, Berths 3 and 4 are invested in and operated as a Green – Smart Port, applying advanced technology and automation, meeting environmental standards, energy saving, and aiming for sustainable development, in line with the global maritime industry trend.
The operation of Berths 3 and 4 at Lach Huyen has completed the system of six modern berths, contributing to improving the cargo handling capacity not only for Haiphong but also for the entire Northern region. In recent years, the cargo volume through Haiphong Port has grown strongly, averaging 12-15% annually, reaching 190 million tons in 2024 and expected to hit 212 million tons in 2025, with the role of Lach Huyen becoming increasingly strategic.
According to the planning, the Lach Huyen Port Area is oriented to become an international transshipment gateway, fully functioning to serve various types of transport: container, general cargo, bulk cargo, liquid/gas, and international passenger port.
This port area can accommodate container ships of up to 18,000 TEU, general cargo and bulk carriers of up to 100,000 tons, liquid/gas carriers of up to 150,000 tons, and large passenger ships of up to 225,000 GT.
According to the Haiphong City Planning for the period of 2021 – 2030, with a vision to 2050, Haiphong will become a large seaport city, taking the lead in the country in industrialization, modernization, and digitalization, and serving as a driving force for the development of the Northern region and the country.
By 2050, Haiphong aims to be a leading seaport city in the region and the world, with a high level of development among the top Asian and global cities, focusing on seaport services, logistics, and sea tourism.
Thus, this project is not only a symbol of a new step in the competitiveness and global connectivity of Vietnam’s logistics system but also a strategic link in the national seaport development planning by 2030, with a vision to 2045, to realize the goal of making Vietnam a strong and rich country from the sea.

Regarding socio-economic development, in the past year, Haiphong affirmed its position as a key economic center of the Northern region and one of the growth drivers of the country. With a GRDP scale in 2024 reaching nearly VND 446,000 billion and a per capita income of about USD 9,486, Haiphong is among the top five localities with the largest economic scale in Vietnam.
Notably, the city has maintained a double-digit economic growth rate continuously for the past ten years, with an increase of 11.01% in 2024. This achievement results from a synchronous development strategy for transport infrastructure – logistics, high-tech industry, and the increasingly important role of the Lach Huyen deep-water port cluster in the regional and global supply chains.
In the first quarter of 2025, Haiphong continued to maintain positive growth in many socio-economic fields. The city’s GRDP in the first quarter of 2025 increased by 11.07% compared to the same period last year, ranking 6th in the country in terms of growth rate.
