Direct Ministerial-level negotiations between Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien and US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer.

In the afternoon of May 16, 2025, in Jeju, South Korea, immediately after the conclusion of the 31st APEC Ministerial Meeting (MRT 31), according to the pre-arranged plan, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation, held direct Ministerial-level negotiations with US Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer.

This was the first in-person Ministerial-level negotiation between Vietnam and the United States after the online negotiation on April 12, 2025, to carry out the negotiation of the Vietnam-US reciprocal trade agreement as directed by the high-level leaders of the two countries.

The negotiation was conducted in a frank, constructive, open, and flexible manner, demonstrating the high efforts of both sides in building a stable economic, trade, and investment relationship, harmonizing interests, and corresponding to the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This is based on respect for sovereignty, autonomy, political institutions, and a balance of interests, in line with international law and practices, and the development level of each country.

The two Ministers agreed on principles, approaches, content orientation, and negotiation plans, laying a foundation for positive outcomes in the following negotiation sessions.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer acknowledged and highly appreciated Vietnam’s goodwill and proactive preparation for the negotiation between the two sides. He also agreed with Vietnam’s proposed approach and suggestions.

The United States hopes that with the efforts of both sides, the technical-level negotiations in the coming days will achieve positive results, bringing practical benefits to the people and business communities of both countries, and contributing to the stability and sustainable development of bilateral trade relations and the comprehensive strategic partnership.

Based on this, the two Ministers agreed on principles, approaches, content orientation, and negotiation plans, laying a solid foundation for the success of subsequent negotiation sessions.
