An up-close look at the repairs being carried out on Rac Bridge, located on National Highway 1A. Video: Pham Truong. |
Rac Bridge spans National Highway 1A, traversing Cam Trung commune in Cam Xuyen district, Ha Tinh province. After 31 years of service, the left-hand side of the bridge, when traveling from North to South, exhibited signs of deterioration.
According to a representative from Road Management Office II.3, under Road Management Division 2 (Vietnam Road Administration – the unit managing the route), the bridge exhibited expansion joint issues, and the concrete on the south wing slab was damaged. Prior to this unexpected repair project, the unit had installed speed limit signs for trucks and coaches and placed wooden boards under the south abutment as a common technical measure used in bridge repair to reduce impact when the wing slab concrete cracks, preventing further damage.
In early May, the project unit diverted traffic to facilitate the repair of the damaged sections. Currently, vehicles traveling on this route are using the new Rac Bridge, located on the right side of the national highway.
On the new Rac Bridge, a soft median divider was installed to separate the two directions of traffic. In addition to warning signs and speed limits of 70 km/h and 50 km/h, the construction unit also placed sandbags to reduce impact, set up traffic cones, and assigned personnel to guide traffic at both ends of the bridge.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, a technical officer at Construction Investment and Consulting JSC 126 (the project executing unit), shared that as per the design, the bridge repair includes replacing the guardrails, scraping off the old asphalt on the bridge deck, resurfacing with C16 concrete, replacing damaged expansion joints, adding transverse beams between spans N1 and N4, re-wrapping the three bridge piers T1, 2, and 3, repairing the damaged beam heads, and repairing the road at both ends of the bridge, extending 30 meters each.
Due to the hot weather, workers have to expedite the construction process on the bridge deck and below. As this is an urgent project, we aim to complete it within three months,” said Mr. Thanh. In the photo, workers endure the heat and sweat to complete the construction.
Mr. Nguyen Manh Ha, the project director, shared that the unexpected repair project for the old Rac Bridge has a total investment of VND 3.3 billion, including VND 2.95 billion for construction. The Road Management Division II (Vietnam Road Administration) is the investor. The project is expected to be completed within three months, so the unit constantly supervises and urges the contractor to finish the repair work as soon as possible.
Under the damaged abutment, workers are adding transverse beams between the bridge spans and repairing the damaged beam heads.
Piers T1, 2, and 3 are being re-wrapped with concrete and reinforced with steel bars inside.
Rac Bridge consists of two bridge units, with the left unit (South-North direction) in use since 1994 and the right unit (North-South direction) constructed in 2013. Located on National Highway 1A, this route experiences high traffic volume.
The Longest Road Tunnel in South-East Asia: A Testament to Vietnamese Engineering.
A monumental feat of engineering, this tunnel stands as a testament to the skill and dedication of Vietnamese workers. Over 1,600 days and nights of labor, coupled with two technical challenges, resulted in a masterpiece that reduced travel time across the mountains to a mere 6 minutes.
With a length of over 21 kilometers, the Hai Van mountain pass was once a daunting challenge for drivers. However, the newly constructed Hai Van tunnel has revolutionized travel, reducing the journey time from a 45-minute treacherous drive to a mere 6-minute smooth transit, along with minimizing fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear.
The Elusive Eastern Bypass: Unraveling the Delays of the Dong Ha City Project
As we find ourselves at the intersection of the 2024 and 2013 Land Laws, there is a lack of policy cohesion that has presented challenges in land clearance efforts. This has resulted in a temporary halt in construction, particularly in relation to drilled pile construction, as some households have yet to agree on the proposed compensation and support packages.
The Elusive Art of Unlocking $500 Million: A Conundrum for Nghe An Province
The People’s Committee of Nghe An province has allocated funds to local authorities for compensation payments regarding land clearance for National Highway 1A. However, progress has been sluggish across the localities.
