The Hau Giang inter-sectoral inspection team for food hygiene and safety inspected a rice business establishment in Hoa An, Phung Hiep after receiving reports of abnormal rice purchased from this store.
Soaking the rice for about 30 minutes, locals noticed that the grains became soft and slightly sticky, resembling cooked rice when gently squeezed.
According to a household in Hoa An, they purchased four 25-kilogram bags of rice, labeled “Mot Buoi Do” and branded with a bee logo, for VND 365,000 per bag.
The family did not notice anything unusual when they initially cooked the rice. However, when they soaked the rice for about 30 minutes to make flour for baking, many grains became soft, sticky, and easily crushed, resembling cooked rice. These abnormal grains accounted for about 30-40% of the total. Fearing for their health, the family returned three bags of rice to the business establishment.
During the inspection, the rice business owner shared that on March 5, they procured 450 kilograms of “Mot Buoi Do” rice from a company in Ninh Kieu, Can Tho, in 25-kilogram bags, intending to sell them to locals.
Following customer reports of abnormal rice, the establishment returned 400 kilograms of rice to the company. The inspection team directly obtained samples of the rice on display and conducted a soaking test, observing similar abnormalities as reported by residents. They requested a statement from the rice seller.
Regarding the remaining rice from the same batch, labeled “Mot Buoi Do,” the inspection team also noticed abnormalities but to a lesser extent, with fewer soft and sticky grains compared to the previous batch.
The inspection team has collected samples of the rice for further testing.
