After a decade of stagnation, Ho Chi Minh City has officially restarted the Vo Van Kiet road extension project and proposed an additional 12km extension to Long An province, forming a vital transport link between the regions.

The extension of Vo Van Kiet road will not only relieve traffic congestion in the western area of Ho Chi Minh City but also boost socio-economic development between the city and Long An province.
According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Construction, the unit has been assigned by the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee to prepare a pre-feasibility study report and adjust the investment project “Construction of the East-West Axis (Vo Van Kiet) extended from National Highway 1 to Long An province.”
The initial project, 2.7km long, from the National Highway 1 overpass to Vo Tran Chi Street (Binh Tan district), was implemented under a BOT contract since 2015 but encountered many obstacles and was terminated in November 2024, with only about 12% completion.
Ho Chi Minh City not only aims to complete the old section but also proposes to extend it further with two additional sections.
Specifically, Section 2 is 6.6km long, extending from Vo Tran Chi to Ring Road 3, passing through areas such as Tan Tao and Tan Kien.
Section 3 is 5.3km long, from Ring Road 3 to the boundary of Long An province, intersecting with provincial road DT.823D.
The road is designed as an urban arterial road with a cross-section of 60m and a design speed of up to 80km/h. It is expected to construct six river bridges (An Ha, Lang Le, Bau Co, etc.) and an interchange with Ring Road 3, including overpasses, tunnels, and ramps.
The total investment for the entire route, according to Option 1, is estimated at VND 19,397 billion, of which land compensation costs account for more than VND 12,800 billion. With such a large capital requirement, the city plans to divide the project into smaller sections for investment.
Notably, Option 2 considers the implementation of the 5.3km section from Ring Road 3 to the Long An boundary first. Although it accounts for only one-third of the total length, this section plays a particularly important role in connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Long An province and large urban-industrial parks such as Sing Viet, Le Minh Xuan, and Binh Loi. The estimated investment for this section alone is VND 13,900 billion, of which nearly VND 9,800 billion is allocated for compensation and site clearance.
The extension of Vo Van Kiet road will not only relieve traffic congestion in the western area of Ho Chi Minh City but also boost socio-economic development between the city and Long An province.
