After three years of anticipation, Apple finally unveils the highly anticipated upgrade to CarPlay, now dubbed CarPlay Ultra. This new version is first available to those who have recently purchased new Aston Martin models in the US and Canada, while existing owners of compatible vehicles will have to wait a few weeks. But this is just the beginning. Apple confirms that they are working with Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis to bring CarPlay Ultra to more mainstream vehicles in the future.

First introduced in 2022, the next-generation CarPlay system was initially promised for a 2024 release but was delayed without an official reason. It is still unclear when Porsche and other committed carmakers will implement CarPlay Ultra in their vehicles.

So, what’s new with CarPlay Ultra? Unlike its predecessor, which only occupied a portion of the center screen, the Ultra version takes over the entire display area in front of the driver. This means that everything from speed and rev counters to temperature, tire pressure, and navigation can now be displayed through this innovative feature.

Users can choose to interact with the system using physical buttons, touchscreen controls, or voice commands via Siri to adjust the radio and climate control settings.

Apple has also redesigned the widgets to seamlessly integrate with the car’s interface, providing real-time information in a dynamic, modern, and sleek manner. CarPlay Ultra requires an iPhone 12 or newer running iOS 18.5 or later, along with a compatible vehicle, to deliver the ultimate Apple-style driving experience.

With its debut in Aston Martin vehicles and the planned collaboration with Asian brands, CarPlay Ultra is not just a technological boost but also a strategic move to counter rivals like Android Automotive. Apple is transforming every journey into an extension of the iOS ecosystem, from your pocket to the steering wheel.
