According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the second round of bilateral negotiations on the Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the United States took place from May 19 to 22 in Washington, D.C.

During the three-day negotiations, with great determination and effort, the Vietnamese and American negotiating teams discussed all the issues raised before the negotiation session in a spirit of goodwill, frankness, respect for each other’s institutions, and a balanced approach to interests, in line with international commitments and the level of development of each country.

“The two sides took the time to share information on each other’s current policies, clarify the content of the draft agreement, and discuss an overall approach to addressing the fundamental issues of common concern to expedite the negotiation process. The negotiating team members from both sides engaged in open and constructive exchanges on economic and trade issues of core interest to both countries,” the Ministry of Industry and Trade informed.

At the conclusion of the negotiation round, Vietnam and the United States made positive progress, identifying groups of issues where consensus was reached or where views were close, as well as groups of issues that needed further discussion to reach agreement in the future. In addition, the two sides set a timeline for responding to the draft agreement, proposing text, and organizing online meetings to prepare for the next negotiation session.

On the third day of work, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien held a negotiation session with Ambassador and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to consolidate the results achieved in the second round of negotiations and identify areas that need to be further focused on in early June.

Ambassador and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer appreciated Vietnam’s goodwill and efforts in addressing issues of US concern and hoped that the two sides would continue to intensify exchanges at both technical and ministerial levels to achieve results as soon as possible.

Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien welcomed the assessment of Ambassador and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and affirmed Vietnam’s determination in building and promoting economic and trade relations with the United States towards a balanced and sustainable direction for the benefit of the people and businesses of both countries.

The head of the Vietnamese negotiating team agreed with Ambassador and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer to instruct both sides to continue enhancing exchanges to reach an agreement that meets the expectations and conditions of each side.
