On May 24, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh chaired a meeting of the Government’s Standing Committee to assess and provide guidance on orientations, solutions, and next steps following the second round of bilateral negotiations on the Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the United States.

The second round of negotiations on the bilateral Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the United States was held from May 19 to 22 in Washington, D.C.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh commended the efforts and dedication of relevant ministries, sectors, agencies, and localities in preparing for and conducting the negotiations. The negotiating delegation followed the directions of the Politburo, the Secretariat, the General Secretary, and the Prime Minister.

The recent negotiation rounds showed positive signs, providing both sides with opportunities to exchange, provide, and share information, leading to better understanding and empathy in the current context. This sets a positive direction for subsequent negotiation rounds, aiming for a suitable and balanced outcome for both parties. The Prime Minister also welcomed the positive engagement of the US side.

Additionally, Vietnamese ministries, sectors, agencies, and businesses have actively engaged with their US counterparts through flexible and diverse means, contributing to the promotion of the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and supporting the negotiation process.

Ministries, sectors, and agencies have promptly provided information to the negotiating delegation and reported to the Government’s Standing Committee for leadership and direction. Agencies, units, localities, and businesses continue to negotiate and promote the purchase of goods in which the US has strengths and Vietnam has demands, such as Boeing aircraft, LNG, and certain agricultural products, aiming for balanced trade between the two countries as soon as possible.

The Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Agriculture and the Environment, and relevant ministries and sectors have promptly addressed issues related to projects of interest to the US side.

The Government’s Standing Committee and the Prime Minister continue to closely monitor the negotiation process and related developments, following the guidance of the Politburo and the General Secretary. They provide guidance on formulating and proposing appropriate, effective, and substantive solutions for both sides, based on the principle of harmonious interests and shared risks.

Ministries, sectors, and agencies, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Vietnamese Embassy, and the Vietnamese Trade Representative in the US, have actively and diligently served the negotiating delegation. There has been seamless and effective coordination among the involved ministries, sectors, and agencies.

Regarding the next steps, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh emphasized that, based on the results achieved, practical situations, and Vietnam’s capacity to meet the requirements, negotiations should be conducted on the principle of harmonious interests and shared risks, ensuring Vietnam’s core interests.

This will contribute to consolidating, strengthening, and promoting the Vietnam-US Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, bringing benefits to both countries and their consumers, and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world. Appropriate and effective plans and measures should be devised to continue the negotiations, striving to conclude them as soon as possible.
