The Drug Administration of Vietnam (DAV), under the Ministry of Health, has ordered a comprehensive review of sunscreen products nationwide, including an inspection of their Sun Protection Factor (SPF) ratings.

According to the DAV, this action is in response to several recent directives and communications from the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health, aimed at combating the production and trade of counterfeit medicines, health supplements, and cosmetics. The DAV has requested the Health Services of provinces and cities to urgently implement the measures outlined in these documents and strengthen the management of sunscreen products, specifically:

Reviewing product registration documents for cosmetics with sun protection claims to ensure compliance with current regulations, and revoking non-compliant registration acceptances.

Instructing functional units to inspect the labeling and advertising of sunscreen products in their respective areas; directing testing centers to increase sampling and testing of sunscreens to verify their SPF ratings; and promptly reporting non-compliant sunscreen samples to the DAV for recall, destruction, and penalties in accordance with regulations.

Additionally, the DAV has mandated that manufacturing and trading facilities responsible for releasing sunscreen products onto the market must adhere to cosmetic management regulations. These entities are also required to scrutinize their Product Information Files (PIFs), along with the methods and results used to determine the SPF ratings of their products, ensuring accuracy and readiness for submission upon request by authorities.

The DAV has further instructed a review of product registration documents and labels for sunscreens to ensure compliance with current regulations and the ASEAN Guidelines for Labeling of Sunscreen Products. This includes verifying the accuracy of sun protection claims and SPF ratings.
