Vietnam’s Durian Exports to China: Navigating Challenges for Sustainable Growth

According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (MARD), expanding this list facilitates enhanced durian exports to the Chinese market.

Durian exports to China are expected to regain growth momentum in the second half of 2025.

Localities and businesses need to seize this opportunity while ensuring strict compliance with phytosanitary and food safety regulations for sustainable exports.

China is currently the largest market for Vietnamese durian exports, accounting for approximately 91% of total durian export turnover in 2024, equivalent to nearly $3 billion.

Mr. Huynh Tan Dat, Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection (MARD), affirmed that China remains a strategic market, playing a decisive role in the growth of Vietnam’s durian industry in the medium and long term.

In the first months of 2025, durian exports experienced a slowdown, mainly due to China’s enhanced quality control measures, particularly regarding heavy metal residue levels such as cadmium and the detection of O-phenylphenol, a substance strictly prohibited in agriculture.

This signals the market’s increasing demands, and Vietnam’s durian industry needs to swiftly adapt and make necessary adjustments.

To address these challenges comprehensively, the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection has collaborated with the police to strictly handle acts of production, trading, and use of O-phenylphenol, thereby safeguarding the reputation of the industry.

Standardizing safe durian production processes, with a focus on soil, water, fertilizers, and pesticides, will help mitigate the risk of cadmium residue in the product. This protocol is being refined and will be transferred to localities in May.

For localities producing durian for export to China, the Department recommends ensuring that all granted plantation codes and packaging facilities comply with regulations, maintain comprehensive technical dossiers, and undergo regular inspections and supervision.

“With timely adjustments and synchronized efforts from the central to local levels, especially by enhancing plantation quality, tightly managing production processes, and strengthening traceability, Vietnam’s durian industry will soon regain its growth trajectory in the last six months of 2025, capitalizing on opportunities as the main crop season starts in July,” affirmed the Director of the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection.
