The new Ham Chuoi, located before the Mien Dong Bus Station in Ho Chi Minh City, is an impressive structure. With a length of 670 meters and a width of 8 meters, this underground tunnel was constructed to the right of National Highway 1, heading towards Dong Nai. The project, costing approximately 75 billion VND, began in 2020 and was officially opened to traffic on January 30, 2023, accommodating cars with up to 9 seats and motorbikes. Despite its modern design and large scale, the tunnel has experienced multiple flooding incidents during heavy rainfall, causing concern among locals and affecting traffic in the area.
On May 22, in response to media inquiries, a representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Authority, the project investor, provided insights into the issue. They confirmed that the heavy rain that began around 6 PM on May 16 did not cause any abnormalities in the tunnel’s pumping system. However, the real challenge lay in the excessive trash accumulation at the water intake gates, which clogged the drainage channels. As the water level in the tunnel had not reached the prescribed height for automatic pump activation, the stagnant water buildup was observed as reported by journalists.

Ham Chuoi at Mien Dong Bus Station frequently flooded due to heavy rain.
“Immediately following the incident, our on-duty unit deployed a cleanup of the trash at the tunnel entrances. By 7 PM on the same day, all the water had been pumped out, the tunnel was dry, and traffic resumed as usual,” the representative from the Ho Chi Minh City Transport Authority assured. To enhance monitoring and prevent similar incidents, the Authority has installed surveillance cameras in the tunnel area since May 20. Additionally, a comprehensive cleaning of the entire tunnel area will be conducted before May 30 to ensure efficient drainage during the upcoming rainy season.
