Heavy rain hit Ho Chi Minh City on May 24th, causing some areas of the domestic passenger terminal T3 at Tan Son Nhat International Airport to leak again.

Soon after, social media circulated videos taken by passengers showing the check-in area of the airline and the baggage conveyor belt leaking during the downpour.

Leaks were spotted at the T3 terminal’s roof during the heavy rain on May 24th, as seen in this video still.

This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. Previously, on May 7th, similar leaks were reported at the T3 terminal during the first heavy rain of the season. In response, the project management board representative attributed the issue to thermal expansion and contraction in the main roof and skylight areas, which are connected by adhesive. Prolonged heat causes the material to expand and creates gaps in the joints, allowing rainwater to seep through during heavy rainfall.

The project management board has instructed the relevant contractors to promptly address the issue by replacing the adhesive layer to prevent recurrence.

Regarding the water leakage at the T3 terminal, the State Council for Construction Quality Inspection (under the Ministry of Construction) – the standing agency of the National Council for Acceptance Inspection of Construction Works – has requested the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV, the project investor) to urgently inspect the site and comprehensively review any issues that have arisen during operation.

Specifically, ACV must propose a comprehensive solution to the water leakage from the skylight to the waiting area and develop a safe operation plan for the rainy season to ensure uninterrupted service for passengers.

The Council also advised the investor to direct the contractors to complete the remaining items as committed to avoid similar incidents in the future.

However, the recurrence of water leakage during today’s rain (May 24th) has raised concerns about the construction and supervision quality of this project.

The T3 passenger terminal project at Tan Son Nhat International Airport, a key project aimed at relieving congestion at the overloaded T1 terminal, was inaugurated on April 19th, 2025, after 20 months of construction. The terminal welcomed its first commercial flight on April 17th.

With a total investment of nearly VND 11,000 billion, the T3 terminal is invested by the Vietnam Airports Corporation (ACV). It is expected to significantly improve aviation infrastructure and passenger services in Ho Chi Minh City.

Designed to serve 20 million passengers annually, the T3 terminal will increase Tan Son Nhat International Airport’s total capacity to 50 million passengers per year. It will also help alleviate congestion and enhance the travel experience at one of the country’s busiest airports.

Currently, all remaining domestic flights of Vietnam Airlines have been transferred to the T3 terminal. However, flights operated by ATR72 aircraft with the Vietnam Airlines (VN) code, connecting Ho Chi Minh City with Con Dao, Ca Mau, and Rach Gia, will continue to operate from the T1 terminal.

Other domestic airlines, including VietJet Air, Pacific Airlines, Vasco, Vietravel Airlines, and Bamboo Airways, will maintain their operations at the T1 passenger terminal for the time being.
