Contrary to previous conspiracy theories, the Earth’s core is not hollow. Instead, this dense, hot ball contains a mixture of precious metals, including platinum, ruthenium, and almost all of the planet’s gold.
It sounds enticing, but essentially, humans will never access this natural treasure buried over 3,000 km beneath the Earth’s surface. But according to recent discoveries made at Hawaiian volcanoes, a small amount of these coveted metals is leaking from the planet’s deepest depths.

“When the first results came in, we realized we had indeed found gold,” said Nils Messling, a geochemist at the University of Göttingen, in a statement. “Our data confirms that material from the Earth’s core, including gold and other precious metals, is leaking into the Earth’s mantle above.”
Messling and his colleagues explained their findings in a study published on May 21 in the journal Nature. The research team recently discovered trace amounts of the precious metal ruthenium while analyzing volcanic rock samples collected across the Hawaiian Islands. While ruthenium isotopes do exist in the Earth’s mantle, they are predominantly found within the core.
The Earth’s core, formed over 4.5 billion years ago, contains more than 99.999% of the planet’s gold and guest metals. It was once believed that these metals were locked away, inaccessible. However, the discovery of ruthenium in surface rocks suggests that super-hot mantle plumes can transport these deep Earth materials to the surface.
“We can now also prove that the material of the super-hot mantle plumes – several hundred thousand billion tons of rock – originates from the boundary to the Earth’s core and wells up to form oceanic islands such as Hawaii,” Messling added.
According to estimates, the amount of gold on the Earth’s surface and crust is approximately 52,000 tons, while the amount of gold mined as of 2013 was around 209,000 tons, according to the World Gold Council.
