In July 2024, the Ministry of Construction and Hanoi authorities commenced the new Duong Bridge project to replace the old bridge, which had deteriorated, and to increase clearance height for water vessels. The project was scheduled for completion in 2025.

However, as of May 26, with over half the projected timeline elapsed, only an estimated 10% of the required land has been cleared in Long Bien and Gia Lam districts. Houses and structures within the project’s scope remain untouched (within the red-lined area).

Due to the lack of land acquisition, the project has only been able to construct two main pillars in the riverbed, unable to proceed with the beam casting process (using the cantilever construction method) to unite the bridge.

Speaking to Tien Phong, Mr. Tran Anh Tuan, representative of Dat Phuong Joint Stock Group (the main contractor) for the project, explained that the cantilever construction method requires symmetry in beam construction from both riverbanks. However, due to the lack of land acquisition in both Long Bien and Gia Lam, the pillars in the riverbed remain isolated, hindering the beam casting process.

Pillar T4 on the Long Bien side is undergoing slow progress, awaiting land acquisition to proceed with subsequent construction phases, including beam casting over the river and building the approach roads.

Hanoi People’s Committee had assigned the People’s Committees of Long Bien and Gia Lam districts to clear over 3.3 hectares of land, including houses, structures, power lines, and stations, by Q4 2024, later extending the deadline to May 2025. However, only 0.4 hectares (12%) have been cleared so far.

The six-month delay in land acquisition has put the project’s 2025 completion date at risk. Meanwhile, vehicles, commuters, and water vessels continue to use the old Duong Bridge, which is in a state of disrepair and congestion.

The Duong Bridge project, approved by the Ministry of Transport (now the Ministry of Construction) in 2022, has a total investment of over VND 1,800 billion. It includes two components: a railway bridge and a road bridge over the Duong River.

The road bridge, which began construction in July 2024, is scheduled for completion in 2025. The project aims to separate road and rail traffic, ensuring safety and reducing congestion. It will also contribute to enhancing the transportation network in the region and increasing water transport capacity along National Waterway No. 1.

The road bridge will be constructed using permanent materials such as reinforced concrete and prestressed concrete, incorporating cable-stayed technology. It will be 700 meters long and 18 meters wide, accommodating six lanes with a designed speed of 80 km/h. To secure the land required for the bridge construction, the Hanoi People’s Committee collaborated with the Ministry of Construction to acquire over 3.3 hectares of land in Long Bien district and Gia Lam district.
