On the eve of the French Tech Summit Vietnam 2025, which will be inaugurated on May 27 in Ho Chi Minh City, a VNA correspondent in France had an interview with Dr. Marko Erman, Head of Scientific Research at Thales Group.
Dr. Erman affirmed that Vietnam has great potential to become an important link in the global technology supply chain, especially in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) applied to defense and cybersecurity.
Highlighting Thales’ long-standing relationship with Vietnam over the past 30 years, Dr. Erman expressed his satisfaction with the strategic and long-term orientation of the partnership through collaborations with large Vietnamese companies such as VNPT, Viettel, and FPT.
Regarding the prospects for Franco-Vietnamese cooperation, Erman expressed optimism that recent bilateral agreements, such as the Franco-Vietnamese Strategic Partnership Agreement, have established a favorable framework for technology investment activities.
“Vietnam is in a comprehensive digital transformation phase and aspires to become a significant technological player in Southeast Asia,” he said. The signing of the Franco-Vietnamese Strategic Partnership Agreement in October 2024 opens up a path for long-term collaboration in strategic areas while underscoring a mutual commitment to supporting Vietnam in realizing its technological ambitions.”
Erman also noted that Thales has provided Vietnam’s armed forces with cutting-edge technologies in anti-submarine warfare, surveillance radar, and electro-optics. Exchanges with the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense have intensified in recent years, opening up positive prospects in air defense, counter-drone technology, and naval defense.

When asked about Vietnam’s potential to join Thales’ global supply chain, Dr. Erman stated that Vietnam’s young and highly skilled workforce contributes to the dynamism in AI research and development and cybersecurity applications.
He also mentioned that Thales’ AI computing platforms require specialized electronic components. With Vietnam’s orientation and expertise in electronics, this could be a starting point for supply chain integration.
To enhance Vietnam’s capabilities, Dr. Erman recommended continuing to promote the development of information technology-related sciences across the entire university education system. In particular, he suggested establishing basic training in artificial intelligence, possibly combined with more advanced technical training in defense equipment.
According to him, developing such a training program would be very beneficial. The combination of AI knowledge and an understanding of military applications would enable a precise grasp of the specific requirements of AI in the defense sector.
He also emphasized the importance of investing in advanced research in machine learning and developing sophisticated algorithms, as these are essential to accelerating innovation in cybersecurity and defense. Additionally, he suggested encouraging international exchange programs and internships at renowned research centers worldwide, enabling Vietnamese specialists to access the latest technological advances in critical areas.
With pride, Dr. Erman shared that Thales has been working in the field of AI for critical systems for over 30 years. The group has recently launched an AI accelerator called CortAix, bringing together 800 AI experts working on over 100 specific use cases of AI for critical systems, with a particular focus on defense.

On the relationship between AI and cybersecurity, Erman emphasized, “AI and cybersecurity are intimately linked: on the one hand, AI enables the design of more sophisticated and large-scale attacks, but in the field of defense, AI also helps us to better predict attack patterns and detect weak signals of attacks more effectively than any other technique.”
The French Tech Summit Vietnam 2025 and the choice of “Year of Innovation” as the theme for Franco-Vietnamese cooperation will contribute to strengthening bilateral relations, especially in high technology, with Thales participating in the forum on the theme “AI for All: Trustworthy, Sovereign, and Safe.”
With over 30 years of experience in AI research and development for critical systems, the Thales Group is ready to expand its cooperation with Vietnam as the country embarks on a robust digital transformation journey.
