The Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology (VAST) signs a Letter of Intent with the French National Centre for Space Studies and Airbus Defence & Space in the field of Earth observation satellite development.
This event, which took place during the French President’s state visit, demonstrates the support of both nations in promoting high-tech cooperation, especially in the fields of satellites and space.
The signed Letter of Intent acknowledges the parties’ willingness to expand cooperation in developing a new generation of satellites for Vietnam, including technology solutions, human resources training, and sharing applications for sustainable development. This builds upon the success of the VNREDSat-1 project, a symbol of high-tech collaboration between Vietnam and France.
Designed and successfully launched by Airbus in 2013, VNREDSat-1 is Vietnam’s first Earth observation satellite, currently operated by VAST. It has provided over 170,000 remote sensing images, effectively serving disaster monitoring, climate change observation, territorial planning, and resource management.
Building on this foundation, the parties agreed to develop the next satellite, leveraging the operational experience of VNREDSat-1 and modern technology within multilateral cooperation programs such as CO3D and the Space-based Climate Observatory (SCO) project led by CNES, with the participation of major space agencies like NASA and JAXA.
On the same day, at the headquarters of the Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology, Prof. Dr. Le Truong Giang, Vice President of VAST, received Mr. Stéphane Vesval, Vice President of ADS and CEO of the satellite sector, to discuss the technical status of VNREDSat-1 and the implementation of the recently signed Letter of Intent.
In addition to satellite cooperation, Airbus is also partnering with the Hanoi University of Science and Technology (USTH), a member of VAST, to develop an aerospace engineering program adhering to European standards. This reflects a comprehensive collaboration strategy, encompassing not only research and design but also the development of high-tech human resources for Vietnam, thus contributing substantially to the Vietnam-France Action Plan for 2024–2028. This plan aims to materialize the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations in an era of innovation and sustainable development.
