The “Shark Jaw” building, officially known as the Ho Guom Trade, Service, and Catering Center, was constructed from 1991 to 1993 and is managed by Transerco. It is located at 1-3-5-7 Dinh Tien Hoang Street, overlooking the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square and offering a panoramic view of Hoan Kiem Lake.

To enhance the Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square, the “Shark Jaw” building has begun its demolition process. A steel barrier has been erected to ensure the safety of the public during construction.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh, a 63-year-old local resident from Cau Go Street, shared: “Last weekend, I noticed the construction team setting up the steel barriers and starting the demolition process. Prior to this, the restaurants, cafes, and businesses renting the premises had already cleared out their belongings and moved to new locations.”

The “Shark Jaw” building consists of six floors, with the second to fifth floors housing restaurants and cafes of various styles. As of now, the cafe and dining establishments have vacated the premises, leaving behind some furniture and chairs.

After the demolition of the “Shark Jaw” building, this area, combined with the surrounding streets, will create a community space of approximately 1.2 hectares.

The Dong Kinh Nghia Thuc Square improvement project is divided into two phases. The first phase includes five tasks, with the demolition of the “Shark Jaw” building taking priority. The tasks in the first phase commenced in May and are expected to be completed by August.

Additionally, the first phase will involve relocating the transformer station within the building’s first floor, refurbishing the Hapro building (7-9 Dinh Tien Hoang), and enhancing the canopies, awnings, and signage of surrounding buildings along Dinh Tien Hoang Street, Cau Go Street, and the beginning of Hang Dao Street.

The Thuy Ta Restaurant will undergo refurbishment, and traffic on Dinh Tien Hoang Street will be reorganized to limit motorized vehicles. This will create a public space that capitalizes on the post-demolition area at 1-3-5 Dinh Tien Hoang and connects to the Dinh Tien Hoang pedestrian street, enhancing the tourism experience in the capital.

The second phase includes studying the development of underground space in the square, continuing the refurbishment of the first layer of surrounding buildings, upgrading technical infrastructure to match the status of Hoan Kiem Lake as a special national relic, and adding urban equipment suitable for the area’s functions.

The underground area is expected to have approximately three basement levels with proposed functions such as cultural and commercial spaces and parking lots. The access to the basement levels will be from Dinh Liet Street.

Despite being enclosed by steel barriers after just two nights of work, tourists still linger to take photos and check-in at the site. Pham Bui Nhu Quynh, a visitor from Danang, shared: “I’ve been to Hanoi several times, and each time, I take pictures here. Although I heard about the demolition of the ‘Shark Jaw’ building, I still wanted to take a commemorative photo. To me, the ‘Shark Jaw’ building is a must-visit photo spot in Hanoi, so its demolition makes me a bit nostalgic.”
