According to a report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers’ Association (VAMA), the large SUV segment witnessed a significant decline in sales during April. Specifically, the total sales of this group reached 1,730 units, a 16.4% decrease compared to the previous month. This decline aligns with the overall downward trend in the domestic automobile market during the same period.
In April, the Ford Everest maintained its leading position in the mid-size SUV segment, recording sales of 1,090 units, a slight growth of 1.5%. This figure accounts for approximately 63% of the total sales in this segment, significantly outperforming all other competitors combined.
Ford Everest continues to showcase its dominance over other models in the mid-size SUV segment.
Trailing behind the Everest is the Toyota Fortuner, with sales of 267 units (a 10.3% increase), approximately 800 units less than its rival. These two models are the only mid-size SUVs that experienced positive growth during April.
The remaining positions in the segment are held by the Mazda CX-8 (182 units), Hyundai Santa Fe (129 units), Kia Sorento (49 units), and Isuzu mu-X (13 units). Meanwhile, the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport did not record any sales in April, placing it at the bottom of the rankings.
Among the aforementioned vehicles, the Hyundai Santa Fe witnessed the steepest decline, with a decrease of 68.4% compared to March (408 units). This drop is quite surprising considering the significant price reductions offered by the brand and dealers, amounting to hundreds of millions of VND during April.
Hyundai Santa Fe experienced a nearly 70% drop in sales during April.
Similar to the Santa Fe, other mid-size SUV contenders such as the Mazda CX-8, Kia Sorento, and Isuzu mu-X also offered promotions during the past month but still struggled to attract buyers.
Overall, the mid-size SUV segment in 2025 remains dominated by the Ford Everest. In the first four months of the year, the American brand sold a total of 3,224 units, outperforming three of its rivals combined: Santa Fe (918 units), Fortuner (861 units), and CX-8 (817 units).
In February, the mid-size SUV segment welcomed a new entrant, the 2025 Skoda Kodiaq. In the coming months, new models such as the 2025 Kia Sorento and the 2025 Isuzu mu-X are expected to be introduced to the Vietnamese market, potentially injecting fresh excitement into the segment.
These new launches are anticipated to foster stronger competition within the mid-size SUV category. Additionally, automakers are expected to continue offering attractive discounts and promotions to clear inventory, promising a more dynamic landscape for mid-size SUVs in the future.
