BYD Vietnam and Grab Vietnam Join Forces to Promote Electric Vehicles

In a recent development, BYD Vietnam, a renowned Chinese automotive brand, has partnered with Grab Vietnam to launch the “Chất từng cuốc – Chốt BYD” campaign from May 19 to August 19. This initiative aims to encourage Grab driver-partners to transition to electric vehicles by offering attractive incentives and practical support programs.

As part of this collaboration, BYD Vietnam has introduced a dedicated lineup of electric vehicles tailored for GrabCar drivers, including the prominent 7-seater MPV BYD M6 Premium Car as the flagship model, along with other electric vehicles such as the BYD ATTO 3, BYD DOLPHIN, and BYD SEAL.

During the campaign period, GrabCar drivers who register to purchase BYD electric vehicles will be eligible for a range of benefits. Specifically, they can avail of an income guarantee of up to VND 25 million per month and activation of the GrabCar Plus service, which offers a more stable customer base. To qualify for these incentives, drivers need to complete a minimum of 400 trips per month, maintain an average acceptance rate of 90%, and keep the cancellation rate below 7%.

Mr. Vo Minh Luc, Executive Director of BYD Auto Vietnam, further added that the first 500 drivers who purchase BYD vehicles under this program will be entitled to six free maintenance services and an extended battery warranty of up to 8 years or 500,000 km (whichever comes first), amounting to a value of VND 36 million.

The BYD ATTO 3 is one of the most affordable models offered by BYD, priced at nearly VND 700 million.

However, after reviewing the incentives announced by BYD Vietnam, many drivers remain cautious due to the lack of clarity regarding the VND 25 million income guarantee. There are also no specific commitments to assure drivers of a smooth transition. “The policies offered by the program don’t seem significantly better than what’s already available in the electric vehicle market,” said Nghiem Hoang Tung, a ride-hailing driver in Ho Chi Minh City. “The income guarantee is only mentioned in the media, and there are no concrete details that give us peace of mind about making the switch.”

Apart from income concerns, the initial investment cost poses a significant barrier. According to GrabCar drivers, the lowest-priced BYD electric vehicle currently costs around VND 700 million, while higher-end models can exceed VND 1 billion. Even if drivers sell their old cars, they would only recoup about VND 200-300 million, meaning they would still need to invest at least an additional VND 500 million for a new electric vehicle. This is a substantial amount, especially considering the intense competition in the ride-hailing market. Taking out a loan would only add to the financial burden.

Another critical challenge is the charging infrastructure, which is essential for electric vehicle adoption. Despite operating in Vietnam for over a year, BYD has not yet invested in its charging network. This forces drivers to rely on third-party charging stations, which can be costly, with rates ranging from VND 5,000-6,000 per kWh and even reaching VND 9,000 per kWh in some locations. Moreover, the number of third-party charging stations is limited, mainly available in major cities, and each area may only have a few charging points. This scarcity presents a significant hurdle for ride-hailing drivers who require flexibility and efficiency in their daily operations.
