In celebration of World Oceans Day with the theme “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” and World Environment Day with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution,” the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in collaboration with relevant ministries, industries, and localities, organized a series of key events to promote action for a green environment, clean seas, and sustainable development.

The main activities include a national launch ceremony for Vietnam Sea and Island Week, celebrating World Oceans Day, which will take place on the evening of June 6, 2025, at Ho Chi Minh Square in Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province, with the theme “Green Technology for a Sustainable Ocean.”

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Minh Ngan:
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment Le Minh Ngan: “Honoring the ocean as the source of life and the driving force for national development.”

“This is an important opportunity to honor the ocean as the source of life and the driving force for our country’s development; promote digital transformation and innovation in protecting resources and developing a sustainable blue economy; and connect policy, technology, and practical action,” emphasized Deputy Minister Le Minh Ngan.

Along with the launch, a series of workshops, exhibitions, and thematic activities on institutional affairs, planning, offshore wind power, AI applications in marine communication, investment connections, and displays of marine economic products will be organized to create a policy forum, connect resources, and promote specific initiatives.

“Through this practical and far-reaching series of activities, we fervently appeal to all Vietnamese people – from urban to rural areas, from mountainous regions to islands, from children to the elderly – to take action every day, no matter how small, to build a green Vietnam and a sustainable ocean.”

Mr. Le Minh Ngan, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Environment

Deputy Minister Le Minh Ngan shared that community activities in localities, especially coastal areas, would be implemented throughout the end of May to June with various forms: cleaning the sea, building green sea parks, applying smart monitoring models, eco-cultural marine tourism, launching digital media competitions on the theme of the ocean, on-site environmental education stations, solutions for collecting floating waste, and the “Green Youth for the Sea” movement… will contribute to raising awareness and mobilizing broad social action.

A SERIES OF EVENTS WILL TAKE PLACE ON A LARGE SCALE NATIONWIDE FOR OVER A MONTH

Mr. Nguyen Hong Hai, Deputy Director of the Sea and Island Department, shared that the national launch ceremony of Vietnam Sea and Island Week in 2025 with the theme “Green Technology for a Sustainable Ocean” will take place on the evening of June 6, 2025, at Ho Chi Minh Square in Dong Hoi City, Quang Binh Province. This event aims to celebrate World Oceans Day 2025 and convey a message promoting the application of science and technology, innovation, and sustainable blue economic development in association with environmental protection and climate change adaptation.

Before and during the main event, several thematic activities will be organized, including a national workshop on institutions and planning for a green blue economy, a field trip to Hon La Port and Hon La Economic Zone, a workshop on AI applications in marine media, culture, and tourism, and an exhibition of Quang Binh’s marine economic products in 2025.

Mr. Nguyen Hong Hai:
Mr. Nguyen Hong Hai: “The events in response to Vietnam Sea and Island Week will take place simultaneously on a large scale nationwide.”

From the end of May to the end of June 2025, events in response to Vietnam Sea and Island Week will take place simultaneously on a large scale nationwide. The series of events focus on practical themes: applying science and technology in managing marine space, sustainably exploiting marine resources, controlling plastic waste (especially marine debris), conserving marine biodiversity and ecosystems, efficient fisheries exploitation, developing smart monitoring technology, and sharing open data.

Various green initiatives will also be implemented in coastal communities, including building sea parks, floating waste collection systems, automatic monitoring stations, and on-site environmental education stations. At the same time, community movements such as beach cleaning, reducing plastic waste, and building green coastal communities will be launched. Art competitions, digital design, and short video contests on the themes of islands, seas, and green technology will also encourage the participation of young people and content creators.

During this period, activities in response to World Environment Day (June 5) and the Month of Environmental Action in 2025 are also taking place enthusiastically. Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thach, Editor-in-Chief of the Agriculture and Environment Newspaper, shared that this year’s World Environment Day theme is “Beat Plastic Pollution,” once again highlighting global concerns about plastic pollution – one of the most pressing environmental challenges today. This is the second time in three years (2023-2025) that this theme has been chosen, demonstrating the international commitment to controlling plastic waste and promoting a circular economy.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thach:
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Thach: “Towards a green, clean, and environmentally friendly community.”

In response to this event, the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment issued Official Letter No. 2141, calling on ministries, industries, localities, and social organizations to join the national campaign “Join Hands to Reduce Plastic Waste – Spread Green Living.”

The national rally in response to World Environment Day will be held on the morning of June 1, 2025, at 30/10 Square in Ha Long City, Quang Ninh Province. Typical activities include displaying recycling models associated with community livelihoods (by the Quang Ninh Women’s Union), introducing recycled products of Green Life Ha Long Cooperative, demonstrating waste reduction initiatives in Ha Long Bay (by Ha Long Bay Management Board), and introducing the “Trash for Cash” model by Quang Ninh Cement and Construction Joint Stock Company.

The national campaign lasts until the end of June with a series of activities such as organizing community/youth forums on the environment, exhibitions of recycled products and circular economic models, policy dialogues on plastic waste reduction, launching a “No Single-Use Plastic Day,” and mobilizing community clean-up campaigns in localities.
