On the morning of May 28, at the Headquarters of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam, General Secretary To Lam held a meeting with Hungarian President Sulyok Tamas, who was on an official visit to Vietnam from May 27-29.
Affirming the special relationship between the two nations, the General Secretary emphasized that Vietnam has always considered Hungary a top priority partner in its foreign policy towards Central and Eastern Europe. “Vietnam is ready to act as a bridge between Hungary and Southeast Asia, and we view Hungary as an important gateway to enhancing cooperation with Central and Eastern Europe and the EU,” asserted General Secretary To Lam.
The General Secretary commended Hungary’s economic and social achievements and its progress in European integration, acknowledging their contribution to enhancing the country’s regional standing and prestige. On this occasion, he shared Vietnam’s vision and development goals for 2030 and 2045, aiming to become a developed country with a high income.
Expressing his appreciation for the outcomes of the talks between President Sulyok Tamas and State President Luong Cuong, General Secretary To Lam proposed several key orientations to deepen the relationship between the two countries. These include maximizing the efficiency of existing cooperation mechanisms such as the Joint Committee on Economic Cooperation, leveraging the advantages of the EVFTA and EVIPA agreements, convening the Joint Committee on Science and Technology cooperation soon, and boosting innovation collaboration. He also requested Hungary’s support in training Vietnamese experts in the field of nuclear energy.
Both sides agreed to strengthen cooperation in various fields, including education, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, labor, culture, local cooperation, and coordinating activities to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations this year.
President Sulyok Tamas expressed his gratitude for the warm and cordial reception by the Vietnamese side for him, his spouse, and the high-ranking delegation. He fondly recalled his student days with Vietnamese friends and the memories of witnessing the resilient struggle of the Vietnamese people, believing in their inevitable victory.
President Sulyok Tamas admired and congratulated Vietnam on its significant achievements in renewal, expressing his confidence in the country’s continued major strides in the future. He emphasized Hungary’s value for its traditional friendship, always considering Vietnam a leading partner in Southeast Asia. He also appreciated the cooperation between Hungary’s ruling Fidesz Party and the Communist Party of Vietnam as an important channel for promoting bilateral relations.
The two leaders agreed to further enhance political trust and solidarity between the ruling parties, continue high-level delegation exchanges, and promote cooperation on key pillars such as trade, investment, science and technology, innovation, and education and training. They also emphasized the need to develop defense and security cooperation as a new pillar and to strengthen people-to-people exchanges to increase mutual understanding between the two nations.
President Sulyok Tamas spoke highly of the role of the Vietnamese community and students in Hungary, recognizing their significant contributions to the socio-economic development of the host country.
Both sides pledged to continue their coordination and mutual support at multilateral forums, especially within the United Nations and ASEAN-EU frameworks. The leaders agreed to support peaceful solutions to international disputes based on international law to maintain peace, stability, and security in the region and the world.
