On May 27th, the People’s Court of Kien Giang province sentenced Nguyen Van Loi (DOB: 1984, residing in Phu Quoc city) to life imprisonment for “Fraudulent appropriation of property.” In addition, the defendant was sentenced to three years in prison for “Forgery of seals and documents of agencies and organizations” and one year for “Use of forged seals and documents of agencies and organizations.” The total sentence is life imprisonment.

According to the indictment, the defendant Loi knew that Ms. LTNH (residing in Ho Chi Minh City) intended to invest in real estate in Phu Quoc City and had the ability to mobilize large sums of money, so he intended to defraud her of her money.
To gain her trust, Loi claimed to own several land plots in Ham Ninh commune (Phu Quoc City) and took her to view three plots of land that were not under his management or ownership. Loi invited Ms. H. to contribute capital for land use certificate procedures, promising to share profits at a ratio of 70% for Ms. H. and 30% for himself.
After Ms. H. agreed to invest, the defendant created a land transfer contract and a “regularization” service contract for real estate, giving her the documents as a guarantee. Loi took money from Ms. H. in multiple installments, citing reasons such as survey costs, taxes, site clearance, and road construction.
Not stopping there, when Ms. H. intended to continue investing to subdivide and sell the land, Loi took her to view another plot of land measuring 22 hectares (22,000 square meters) in Rach Ham, Ham Ninh commune. This land belonged to Loi’s father but had already been sold to someone else. Loi forged a power of attorney and falsified his father’s signature, inviting Ms. H. to invest an additional 3 billion VND.
In 2022, when Ms. H. requested the land and related documents, the defendant Loi continued to forge documents such as a request for confirmation of land origin, a 1/500 scale land map excerpt, a deposit contract, a debt confirmation, and a receipt for money received, and handed them over to Ms. H.
In total, Loi appropriated over 34.2 billion VND from Ms. H.
