The latest update following Thursday morning’s signing ceremony, attended by senior leaders of Hoa Phat and SMS Group – a leading global metallurgical equipment supplier, was shared.
The plan includes SMS Group designing, supplying, and installing a production line for rail and special steel for Hoa Phat. The main equipment is manufactured in Germany.

In a post on the Enterprise website, Hoa Phat stated that this is the most modern system in Europe, ensuring consistent quality according to international high-speed railway standards. The output of the line will be urban railway steel, crane rails, high-speed railway rails, or U-shaped steel, I-beams, H-beams, V-shaped steel, and special steel, serving key national railway projects and exporting to international markets.
At the ceremony, Hoa Phat’s Chairman, Mr. Tran Dinh Long, shared that the Group would focus on producing high-quality steel to serve the railway, oil and gas, energy, and defense industries, contributing to replacing high-grade steel imports. Fulfilling its commitment to the Government, Hoa Phat invests in a factory to produce rail steel, shaped steel, and special steel, ensuring the supply of the best quality products at competitive prices for high-speed railway projects and other national key projects.
Mr. Bernhard Steenken, SMS Group’s Vice President for the APAC-MEA business region, shared, “We have provided similar systems to global partners, serving high-speed railways in the US, China, India, Europe, and the Middle East. With this line, the Hoa Phat Group will become the first enterprise in Southeast Asia to produce high-speed railway rails and various other special steels with international quality standards.”
SMS Group has supplied the first rail mill equipment since 1990 and has provided 14 lines globally. Currently, 90% of the world’s rail rolling mills use SMS Group technology and equipment.
The company, headquartered in Mönchengladbach, is a long-time partner of Hoa Phat. Previously, SMS Group provided multiple equipment items for the Hoa Phat Dung Quat Iron and Steel Integrated Complex Project and the Hoa Phat Hai Duong Iron and Steel Complex Project.
According to Hoa Phat, only a few large steel corporations globally can produce high-speed railway steel, such as Voestalpine (Austria), JFE (Japan), Baosteel (China), and JWS Steel (Italy).
