While iPhone upgrades in recent years have been largely iterative, the iPhone 17 Pro is set to bring about a true breakthrough with a series of tangible, visible changes.
First up is the rear camera array, which Apple has barely touched since the iPhone 11 Pro. This time, the camera still retains the triangular triple-lens setup, but it won’t be housed within a rounded square module in the corner. Instead, it will be arranged in a horizontal bar that stretches across the back of the device. Accompanying components like the LiDAR scanner, flash, and microphone are also rearranged to one side, creating a more modern and cohesive look.

It’s not just the camera that’s seeing a makeover; the materials used for the iPhone 17 Pro’s back panel are also set to undergo a dramatic shift. Apple may ditch the steel and titanium frames that have come to define the Pro line’s premium aesthetic in favor of aluminum – a step back in terms of materials, but a leap forward in design. According to leaked CAD drawings from Sonny Dickson, the back of the iPhone 17 Pro will be crafted from aluminum, featuring a dedicated glass window for wireless charging and MagSafe. This marks a bold departure from the full-glass back panels that have been the standard for years.

Another notable improvement is the introduction of a vapor chamber cooling system, a first for the iPhone. This new feature will enable the iPhone 17 Pro to maintain high performance over extended periods, facilitate faster charging, and enhance gaming experiences without overheating issues. If realized, the phenomenon of thermal throttling will soon be a thing of the past for the Pro model.
Of course, the iPhone 17 Pro will also bring along the usual minor upgrades – not too flashy but substantial enough to make a difference in daily use: an in-house Wi-Fi chip, 12GB of RAM, a 24MP selfie camera, a brand new 48MP telephoto camera, dual-angle video recording, and more. However, don’t expect a smaller Dynamic Island – that rumor seems to have been put to rest.
In summary, if you’ve been waiting for an iPhone that offers a truly distinct experience in terms of both looks and feel, the iPhone 17 Pro could be the first answer in years that goes beyond mere iteration. And if you’re a fan of ultra-slim designs, keep an eye out for the iPhone 17 Air, set to launch alongside the Pro model – but that’s a story for another day.
