On May 26th, leading maritime transport company CMA CGM announced a collaboration with Saigon New Port, a top defense logistics provider in Vietnam, to develop berths 7 and 8 of the Lach Huyen Port in Hai Phong city.

The partnership will focus on designing, constructing, and operating this deep-water port project. With a targeted operation commencement in 2028, the port aims to cater to the growing volume of cargo traffic in Vietnam. The project is expected to establish CMA CGM’s long-term presence in the country, which is emerging as a regional supply chain hub.

CMA CGM has been operating in Vietnam since 1989 and currently manages 29 weekly services across seven ports nationwide. The company co-owns the Gemalink port in Cai Mep and the Vietnam International Container Terminal (VICT) in Ho Chi Minh City.

Saigon New Port obtained the Investment Registration Certificate for the project in May 2023. The total investment capital for the project is estimated at VND 12,793 billion, including VND 1,919 billion in equity capital from Saigon New Port and VND 10,873.741 billion in mobilized capital. The project has a duration of 70 years.

The project’s scope includes the construction of two berths totaling 900 meters in length, capable of accommodating container ships of up to 12,000 or 18,000 Teus; a barge berth of 200 meters in length for barges with a capacity of 160 Teus; cargo handling equipment; port protection works; warehouses; port infrastructure; a ship turning basin; and a connecting channel to the Lach Huyen public maritime channel.

The project will utilize an area of approximately 79.86 hectares, including the ship turning basin and the connecting channel to the maritime channel, which covers about 22.332 hectares.

Once operational, the project is expected to handle approximately 1.9 million Teus per year and employ around 600 people.

Saigon New Port highlighted the growth in container throughput at ports in the Hai Phong area, with an average annual increase of 15%. According to statistics from the Hai Phong Statistics Office, the cargo volume handled by ports in April 2025 is estimated at 14.327 million tons, a 2.25% increase from the previous month and an 11.5% increase compared to the same period in 2024. In the first four months of this year, the cargo volume through Hai Phong ports reached 52.837 million tons, an 8.06% increase compared to the same period last year.

Port revenue in the first four months of 2025 amounted to VND 2,419.26 billion, a 3.35% increase compared to the same period last year.

In the Lach Huyen area, Saigon New Port is also a major shareholder, with a 51% stake in Hai Phong International Container Terminal (HICT) – the operator of berths 1 and 2 since 2018, with a capacity of approximately 1.5 million Teus per year. The remaining capital is held by partners Mitsui OSK Lines, Itochu, and Wan Hai Lines.

Berths 3 and 4, invested in by Hai Phong Port Joint Stock Company under the Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), are expected to be completed in 2025 with a capacity of 1.1 million Teus per year. Meanwhile, berths 5 and 6, invested in by Hateco Group Joint Stock Company, were inaugurated and put into operation earlier this year, accommodating vessels of up to 18,000 Teus.
