On the morning of May 31, which fell on the Duanwu Festival (the fifth day of the fifth month in the lunar calendar) and was also a weekend, there was a bustling atmosphere in traditional markets in Ho Chi Minh City, such as Ba Hoa Market, Hoang Hoa Tham Market (Tan Binh District), and Tran Huu Trang Market (Phu Nhuan District), as people shopped for offerings.
The festival is marked by diverse traditions across regions, and this was reflected in the varying items on display for the ceremonial offerings. Meanwhile, large supermarket chains such as Co.opmart and Aeon also offered a wide range of products to meet the needs of customers during this festival, providing both convenience and attractive promotions.
For instance, at Aeon Supermarket in Tan Phu District, free-range chickens with scallion were on sale, reduced in price from VND 147,200 per chicken to VND 130,000.
Ba Hoa Market in Tan Binh District, known for its central Vietnamese cultural identity, saw a high demand for characteristic items such as tro cakes, mung bean sweet soup, sticky rice with mung beans, and fresh flowers.
A slight increase in prices was observed compared to the previous year and the days leading up to the festival. Specifically, the price of tro cakes without fillings ranged from VND 45,000 to VND 70,000 for ten cakes, depending on their size. Larger-sized tro cakes with fillings were priced at VND 85,000 to VND 90,000 for ten cakes. The tre leaf tro cakes, a specialty of Soc Trang, were sold at VND 75,000 for ten cakes. Sweet rice wine packages ranged from VND 15,000 to VND 40,000.
Fresh flowers also saw a slight price increase compared to non-festival days: chrysanthemums were priced at VND 25,000 per bunch, chrysanthemum mums at VND 40,000, and lily flowers at VND 130,000. Sticky rice was commonly priced between VND 10,000 and VND 30,000 per box. Sweet soup with sticky rice balls was sold at VND 6,000 to VND 7,000 per ball, packaged in boxes or plastic bags depending on the quantity chosen by shoppers.
Ms. Hanh, a flower vendor at Tran Huu Trang Market in Phu Nhuan District, shared, “Although the market saw a larger crowd than usual, the purchasing power remained relatively unchanged.”
