Hanoi is implementing comprehensive solutions to improve the environment of To Lich River, with the main focus on constructing a dam system to retain water and regulate the river flow. The first project is underway at Quang Bridge in Thanh Liet commune, Thanh Tri district, with efforts to revive the capital’s vital river.

The project is part of a program to enhance the living environment, natural ecosystem, and sanitation in central urban areas within the To Lich River basin, the left bank of the Nhue River, and the Lu River basin. For over two months, the construction team has concentrated equipment, machinery, and dozens of workers to accelerate progress and ensure the project’s timely completion.

According to VTC News reporters, at Quang Bridge, the first dam of the To Lich River is taking shape after several weeks of urgent construction. The water in the dam has been drained to work on the foundation.

Components such as the concrete floor, dam structure, and retaining wall are being gradually finalized.

Under the river, workers are hastily installing beams and fixing frames to ensure the structure’s stability during operation.

Additionally, a 5-meter gap is left to ensure water flow during construction and future operations.

The Quang Bridge dam is one of three dams planned by Hanoi along the To Lich River. The other two locations are Cot Bridge in Yen Hoa ward, Cau Giay district, and Dau Bridge in the Linh Dam area of Hoang Mai district.

The dam system not only serves the technical function of retaining water and regulating flow but also creates an ecological landscape, helping to prevent summer droughts and supporting flood drainage during the rainy season, thereby reducing the risk of flooding in the city center.

Along with the dam construction, the project also involves intensive sludge dredging along the entire To Lich River. Dozens of workers from the Hanoi Sewerage and Drainage Limited Company are stationed in the river to operate sludge suction equipment day and night.

The total length of the dredging route is about 13.8 km, from the intersection of Hoang Quoc Viet and Bui streets to National Highway 70. The work is expected to be substantially completed by August.

After completing the dredging, Hanoi will distribute clean water from West Lake and the Red River to the To Lich River through a pipeline system exceeding 5 km in length. This system, with an investment of about VND 550 billion, runs underground from the Red River through Vo Chi Cong Street, discharging into the To Lich River at the intersection of Hoang Quoc Viet and Bui streets. The addition of clean water will improve the river’s flow rate and quality, significantly supporting the revival of the underwater ecosystem.

The To Lich River has long been considered Hanoi’s primary drainage axis, playing a crucial role in regulating water levels and preventing flooding in the inner city. However, for many years, the river has received about 160,000 cubic meters of domestic wastewater daily from over 300 discharge outlets. Prolonged pollution has left the river devoid of life, making it one of the capital’s most critical environmental concerns.
