Expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport Approved by the Government

The Vietnamese government has given its approval for the expansion of Phu Quoc International Airport to accommodate the APEC 2027 conference. The expansion will be carried out as a business investment as stipulated in the Law on Investment.

The Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee has been entrusted with selecting domestic investors and implementing the expansion project, ensuring that it aligns with the airport’s dual civilian-military nature. The Committee has been delegated the authority to approve and adjust investment policies for the expansion project. They are also responsible for organizing the environmental impact assessment report appraisal and making decisions on fire protection design approval and acceptance for the project’s construction items.

The government has also agreed to retrieve and transfer the infrastructure assets of Phu Quoc International Airport, which were previously managed by the Ministry of Construction, to the management of the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee for handling and implementing the expansion project.

The transfer of airport infrastructure assets to local management does not apply to assets managed by the Airport Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) that are built on defense, security, or military-managed land, in accordance with the approved plan by the Ministry of Construction.

The Minister of Construction will decide on the retrieval and transfer of state-invested and managed infrastructure assets of Phu Quoc International Airport to the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee.

The government has instructed the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee to organize the receipt of state-invested infrastructure assets of Phu Quoc International Airport for management, handling, and project implementation. The Committee is to hire a valuation company to determine the asset value, which will serve as a basis for deciding the value of assets to be returned to the state.
