After over a decade as Mazda’s smallest CUV, the CX-3 is nearing the end of its life cycle and will make way for a new model.
Trademark filings and hints from company leadership suggest that the successor, possibly named the CX-20, is in the works. Positioned just below the CX-30, this vehicle seems to continue the brand’s focus on driver-oriented design.
At a recent event related to Mazda’s operations in Thailand, the leadership provided some hints about the new model along with initial sketches. In terms of design, the CX-20 is likely to adopt the latest Kodo language, similar to the CX-60 and CX-90.

The sketches reveal a compact CUV with sleek lines, a sporty profile, and a low roofline. The front features a wider, more aggressive grille, flanked by slim LED headlights and vertically stacked daytime running lights. These design cues seem to take inspiration from the next-generation CX-5.
From the side, the CX-20 appears to have a coupe-like roofline that slopes towards the rear, giving it a youthful appearance. Mazda’s concept drawings even suggest a contrasting black roof and unique circular taillight details. While sketch details are often exaggerated, we can be sure that the CX-20 will stand out visually.

Regarding the interior, while no images of the CX-20’s cabin have surfaced yet, it is expected to be more upscale and technologically advanced than the current CX-3. The interior space is also hoped to be improved upon, as the CX-3 has been criticized for its cramped rear seats and limited cargo area.
In terms of technology, expect the latest Mazda instrument cluster and infotainment system. However, whether the rotary knob will be retained remains to be seen. Some Mazda products developed in China have already transitioned to a fully touch-screen interface.

Mazda has invested $150 million in its Thai manufacturing facility, signaling its intention to build a new generation of small electrified SUVs. This strongly suggests that the CX-20 will utilize a platform designed for hybrid powertrains.
Following the brand’s electrification roadmap, this model is expected to feature a mild hybrid setup paired with an I4 engine, possibly a 1.5 or 2.0-liter. Similar to the CX-3, the CX-20 will likely come standard with front-wheel drive and offer all-wheel drive as an option. While a PHEV version has not been confirmed, it could appear in the future.
This segment is one of the most competitive in the industry. The CX-20 will go up against strong contenders such as the Hyundai Creta, Honda HR-V, and Toyota Yaris Cross. Mazda has not confirmed when the CX-3’s successor will debut, but current signs indicate that we will see it within the next 18 months. The new crossover will primarily target the Asia-Pacific market, including Vietnam.
