According to the National Power System Operation Company (NSMO), at noon today, June 2nd, the national power consumption capacity reached a record high with a peak capacity of 51,290MW, surpassing the 2024 peak by 1,757MW (49,533MW).
This 1,757MW increase is equivalent to the total installed capacity of two power plants: Lai Chau Hydropower Plant (1,200MW) and Thai Binh 1 Thermal Power Plant (600MW).
NSMO attributed this to the extreme hot weather that has been affecting the Northern and Central regions.
At noon on June 2nd, the national power consumption reached a record high with a peak of 51,290MW.
Hanoi Electricity Corporation also reported that the peak power consumption in Hanoi reached a new record of 5,430MW during the noon peak, surpassing the 2024 peak of 5,263MW.
Similarly, the Northern Power Corporation recorded a peak power consumption of 17,400MW in the Northern region (from Ha Tinh province onwards, excluding Hanoi) during the noon peak, which is 100MW higher than the 2024 peak of 17,300MW.
According to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the Northern region has been experiencing the most intense heatwave since the beginning of summer. Temperatures in most of the North and North-Central regions have reached 37–39°C, with many places exceeding 40°C.
The combination of extreme heat and low humidity of 40 – 45% has caused a surge in electricity demand, especially for cooling appliances.
To prevent local power grid overload in some residential and urban areas, as well as to ensure the safe operation of the power system, EVN recommends that customers use electricity safely, economically, and efficiently, especially during peak hours in the afternoon (13:00 – 15:00) and evening (21:00 – 23:00); use air conditioning reasonably, setting the temperature at 27°C and above, and combining it with fans to increase cooling efficiency; avoid using multiple high-power appliances simultaneously to prevent overload, accidents, and fires in households, agencies, and offices.
The Power Pricing Puzzle: Experts Call for a Clear and Tailored Path for Electricity Price Hikes
Experts and businesses agree with EVN’s electricity price hike, but emphasize the need for transparency and a longer roadmap instead of the proposed quarterly increases.
