According to a study by the World Bank (WB) and the International Energy Agency (IEA), transitioning to electric vehicles can reduce Vietnam’s dependence on oil imports and enhance its energy security.

One direct impact of adopting electric vehicles is the reduction in gasoline and diesel consumption by fossil fuel-powered vehicles.

If Vietnam’s electric vehicle usage follows an accelerated carbon emission reduction scenario, the total amount of gasoline and diesel saved by 2050 would be nearly 900 million liters.

Converting the saved gasoline and diesel into oil barrels, Vietnam could save approximately 6.224 million barrels of oil by 2050.

At current international oil prices, the total saved import cost for Vietnam by 2050 would be about USD 498 billion. The transition to electric vehicles can also reduce Vietnam’s environmental damage costs due to local air pollution, with a reduction of USD 30 million by 2030 and USD 6.4 billion by 2050.

WB states that the emission reduction impact of transitioning to electric vehicles by 2030 will be modest, mainly because most electric vehicles during this period will be motorcycles.

After 2030, especially from 2035 onwards, as the transition shifts from motorcycles to cars, trucks, and inter-provincial buses, the emission reduction impact will rapidly increase.

The gap is due to the limited transition to electric vehicles in long-distance heavy-duty segments, such as inter-provincial passenger cars and trucks, which is projected to be only 25-40%.
