Vietnam and Estonia Strengthen Maritime Ties: A Step Towards Sustainable and Innovative Development

Witnessed by the Prime Minister, in the afternoon of June 5th, Mr. Nguyen Canh Tinh, CEO of Vietnam Maritime Corporation (VIMC), and Mr. Rene Path, Member of the Management Board and Business Development Director of Port of Tallinn, signed a Memorandum of Understanding for strategic cooperation between the two companies.

This Memorandum of Understanding showcases the joint determination of the leading enterprises in the maritime industry in Vietnam and Estonia to collaborate in port management and operations, with a focus on developing green and smart ports, ultimately aiming to promote environmental protection and innovation.

According to VIMC’s leadership, Port of Tallinn is a pioneer in the Baltic region for its development of green ports and smart maritime transportation. The cooperation between the two parties will not only boost technological innovation in Vietnam’s logistics industry but also enhance VIMC’s position on the international maritime transportation map.

Port of Tallinn, managing the four largest port clusters in Estonia, including the cargo ports of Muuga and Paldiski South, and the passenger ports of Old City and Saaremaa, is currently focusing on developing smart infrastructure, clean energy, and expanding its port industrial park. With a total cargo throughput of approximately 20 million tons per year, Tallinn serves as a cargo hub for the Nordic region and is at the forefront of the sustainable development trend.

As per the agreement, Vietnam Maritime Corporation and Port of Tallinn will jointly research and implement modern, green, and sustainable port management and operation models. Specifically, both parties agree to explore the application of digital technologies, artificial intelligence, and automation in port operations; promote clean energy transition and develop environmentally friendly infrastructure; and share experiences in smart port planning, digital logistics development, and establishing global green standards.

Port of Tallinn is currently the largest port complex in Estonia, comprising four main ports: Old City, Saaremaa, Muuga, and Paldiski South. Muuga, Estonia’s largest cargo port, handles 20 million tons of cargo annually and is a center for container, bulk liquid, dry bulk, and general cargo. Meanwhile, Paldiski South has great potential with its modern infrastructure suitable for Ro-Ro operations, an area that VIMC is strongly promoting in its multimodal transport development strategy.

Representing Vietnam, VIMC is the country’s leading maritime corporation, boasting an extensive network of ports across the nation and possessing substantial strengths. In recent years, VIMC has continuously expanded its international cooperation, aiming to establish transcontinental logistics chains and enhance its role as a regional transshipment hub.

The Prime Minister’s visit to Estonia aims to foster comprehensive cooperation between Vietnam and the Nordic countries, especially in the fields of digital transformation, energy, education, and strategic infrastructure. During this visit, Vietnamese enterprises have engaged in numerous discussions and signed significant cooperation agreements with local partners, reflecting the Vietnamese government’s proactive, comprehensive, and substantive economic diplomacy orientation.
