Suzuki, a well-known Japanese brand for its durable and fuel-efficient motorcycles, has officially entered the electric scooter race with the e-Access model in the context of a booming electric vehicle market in Southeast Asia.

First launched in India, this electric scooter doesn’t stand out for its breakthrough technology or eye-catching design. Instead, it conquers users with its practicality, simplicity, and extremely affordable price of just around $1,250.

Right from the start, Suzuki e-Access clearly targets the mass market, mainly urban commuters who value durability, ease of use, and low operating costs. With this in mind, it’s understandable that the scooter almost “ignores” complex design lines or luxurious equipment often found on mid-range and high-end electric scooters.

Suzuki recently launched the e-Access, a purely practical electric scooter, in the Indian market.

Minimalist Design, Strong Practicality

The e-Access has an extremely simple appearance, true to the spirit of an urban means of transportation. The overall design is neat, friendly, and easy to maneuver. The front of the scooter features a single-color LED headlight, combined with a pair of turn signals neatly placed on both sides of the front apron.

The wheels are made of cast aluminum alloy, suitable for daily use while ensuring stability. Although it’s not aesthetically striking, this simplicity is an advantage, making the scooter lighter, easier to maintain, and user-friendly for all types of riders.

Adequate Equipment, Focusing on Efficiency

The technical highlight of the e-Access lies in its 60Ah lithium-ion battery system, allowing the scooter to travel nearly 62 miles on a single full charge. While this range is not impressive compared to some high-end electric scooters, it is reasonable for urban environments with frequent short-distance travel.

The e-Access’s electric motor delivers a maximum power of about 5.5 horsepower and a maximum torque of 11 lb-ft (approximately 15 Nm). With these specifications, the scooter can handle everyday driving situations such as accelerating from a stoplight, climbing gentle slopes, or carrying an additional passenger while maintaining stable handling.

However, it’s important to note that the e-Access has a relatively long charging time when using a standard charger. Specifically, it takes about 4.5 hours to charge from 0% to 80% and approximately 6 hours and 42 minutes to fully charge. Nonetheless, Suzuki also offers a fast-charging option, reducing charging time from 0 to 100% to just 2 hours if users have access to a high-power charging station.

The entire scooter lacks intricate design elements, focusing solely on practicality, even the front end, which features only a simple headlight and turn signals.

Attractive Pricing, Targeting Students and Young Professionals

One of the most attractive factors of the Suzuki e-Access is its price. In India, it retails for just 100,000 rupees, or approximately $1,250. This price point makes the e-Access significantly more affordable than most electric scooters currently available in Vietnam and even cheaper than many gas-powered scooters in the same displacement range, such as the Honda Vision or Yamaha Janus.

Moreover, the operating costs are also a significant advantage. With an electric motor, users don’t have to worry about periodic oil changes, air filter replacements, spark plug maintenance, or complex repairs associated with gasoline engines. In addition, the electricity cost for each near 62-mile journey is just a few cents, a fraction of the current gasoline fuel cost.

Expanding Market Share Opportunities in Southeast Asia

With its performance, the e-Access could be a smart move for Suzuki to regain market share in developing countries like Vietnam, Indonesia, and Thailand, where consumers are increasingly interested in green transportation options but are still hesitant due to price and maintenance concerns.

Although there is no official distribution plan for the e-Access in Vietnam, if Suzuki decides to introduce this model to the domestic market at a similar price point, it will undoubtedly be a strong competitor to the current leaders in the affordable electric scooter segment, which is booming but lacks offerings from established Japanese brands.

The Suzuki e-Access is not a revolutionary electric scooter in terms of technology or design. But in a market yearning for smart, cost-effective, and affordable transportation solutions, the introduction of a 100% electric scooter from Suzuki, priced at just $1,250, with a range of over 62 miles per charge, is a positive sign. The simplicity, practicality, and efficiency of the e-Access prove that electric scooters don’t always have to be flashy or expensive, and that’s why this model is likely to become a popular choice in densely populated Asian cities in the near future.
