At the working session with the Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, and related parties on June 4, Nguyen Van Minh, Deputy General Director of BAF Vietnam, discussed the proposal to pilot a smart multi-story pig farming model.
BAF Vietnam JSC aims to reach a scale of 10 million commercial pigs by 2030. To achieve this goal, the company plans to implement two pig farming projects using a multi-story farm model in strategic cooperation with Muyuan Group, the world’s largest pig farming company. Muyuan stands out for its multi-story farm model, integrating modern technology in management, waste treatment, air filtration, odor removal, and environmental protection.
“BAF Vietnam has sent a proposal to the Ministry to build a smart six-story pig complex, including two projects: a project in Tan Chau, Tay Ninh, with a capacity of 64,000 breeding sows, producing 1.6 million commercial pigs per year, and a project in Dong Phu, Binh Phuoc, with a scale of 20,000 sows, producing 500,000 commercial pigs annually,” Mr. Minh informed.

Regarding project implementation, the enterprise representative stated that there are no specific regulations on the stocking density for this model.
“Although there is the TCVN 14209:2024 standard for multi-story farming, the specific legal criteria regarding the environment, construction permits, and environmental impact assessments remain unclear, causing difficulties in completing the permit application process. In addition, administrative procedures are complex and overlapping, and there is no ‘one-door’ mechanism for high-tech agricultural projects,” Mr. Minh pointed out.

On this issue, Pham Kim Dang, Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary, said that Vietnamese law does not prohibit the farming of livestock and poultry in multi-story buildings. The high-tech pig farming model in multi-story buildings aligns with the state’s direction to promote research, application, and technology transfer, as stipulated in legal bases such as the Livestock Law and Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW…
“However, BAF must pay special attention to environmental and disease safety issues. With high stocking density and a closed environment, if not strictly controlled, the risk of disease outbreaks will be significant, especially since a single infected individual can cause an outbreak in the entire farming area. Welfare and stocking density should be implemented appropriately for each region and province, ensuring a reasonable distance between farms and residential and other areas.”
“In addition, BAF needs to implement strict measures for slaughtering, processing, and traceability, while ensuring that the waste treatment system meets standards and establishing a clear consumption and export plan for the output products,” Mr. Dang noted.
