Hòa Bình hydroelectric reservoir runs dry.
On June 7, Tien Phong newspaper published an article titled “Hòa Bình Hydroelectric Reservoir Runs Dry: Water Levels Drop to Historic Lows,” reporting on the unusually low water levels in the reservoir, exposing lake beds and impacting tourism, aquaculture, and local livelihoods.
To understand the reasons behind the water level drop and its potential impact on power generation at the Hòa Bình Hydroelectric Power Plant, our reporter spoke with Mr. Pham Van Vuong, Director of the Hòa Bình Hydroelectric Company.
Mr. Vuong acknowledged that the water level in the Hòa Bình reservoir is lower compared to the same period in 2024, but assured that this is not an abnormal phenomenon and does not affect electricity production.
According to Mr. Pham Van Vuong, the low water level in the Hòa Bình hydroelectric reservoir is part of a planned and approved operation, following the proper procedures.
“The current water level in the Hòa Bình reservoir is above 85 meters, which is lower than the same period last year, but still within the normal range,” Mr. Vuong said. “It is still more than 5 meters above the ‘dead water level’ and does not affect power generation at the Hòa Bình Hydroelectric Power Plant.”
Mr. Vuong explained that the water level reduction is part of the overall operation plan for the hydroelectric system this year and is also intended to prepare for the upcoming flood season.
Additionally, the low water level in the Hòa Bình reservoir facilitates the demolition of the enclosure dyke for the under-construction Hòa Bình Hydroelectric Expansion Plant, which must be completed by June 15.
Mr. Vuong assured that as water flows in from upstream, the reservoir’s water level will gradually rise according to the planned schedule.
