During the meetings, the Prime Minister expressed his confidence that under the leadership of Mr. Antonio Costa and Ms. Ursula von der Leyen, the EU will navigate through challenges and achieve even greater development.

The leaders of the European Council and Commission affirmed the EU’s appreciation for its relationship with Vietnam and shared the desire to elevate the partnership to a comprehensive strategic level.

Regarding the priorities for Vietnam-EU relations in the coming period, the Prime Minister suggested that both sides focus on upgrading the Vietnam-EU relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. He also urged the continuation of efforts to ratify the EVIPA and requested the EC to consider lifting the IUU “yellow card” for Vietnam’s seafood products.

The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for the EU to strengthen its relationship with Southeast Asia, a dynamic and young region with the world’s fastest-growing population and immense development potential. Vietnam, he assured, is ready to act as a bridge to enhance EU-ASEAN relations.

The European Council and Commission leaders agreed to coordinate and promote bilateral cooperation priorities as suggested by the Prime Minister. They affirmed that more EU members will soon ratify the EVIPA.

Given the many uncertainties in the global and regional context, both sides agreed to enhance coordination and promote multilateral cooperation.
