On June 9, Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Tran Sy Thanh, met with the Management Authority of Hanoi Urban Railway (MRB) to review the progress of urban railway projects in the city.

During the meeting, MRB representatives informed that the Nhon-Hanoi Railway Project, the elevated section, has been operational since August 2025 and is ensuring safety. The underground section is currently 48.72% complete. It is expected that by the end of 2025, both tunnels will be finished.

Regarding the Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao line, the MRB is in the process of finalizing the adjusted project dossier, which is expected to be submitted to the city for approval in July 2025. However, there are still 187 households in the Xuan Dinh depot area and 79 households in the extended Nguyen Van Huyen street project area that need land clearance, which may impact the progress of the elevated section of the project.

Hanoi is set to commence construction on the Metro Line 5 by the end of 2025.

For the Line 5: Van Cao – Ngoc Khanh – Lang – Hoa Lac, MRB has signed one contract, and the remaining nine consulting packages are being finalized for contract signing.

At the meeting, Chairman Tran Sy Thanh instructed the relevant units to study the overall planning of the lines following the TOD model, ensuring synchronized implementation. He also agreed to commence the construction of the Xuan Dinh depot in October 2025 and the entire line in the fourth quarter of 2026 for the project of investing in the construction of the Hanoi Urban Railway Line 2 (phase 1), Nam Thang Long – Tran Hung Dao section.

Regarding the investment project for the construction of Hanoi Urban Railway Line 5, the People’s Committee of Hanoi requested MRB to review and expedite the progress to ensure the commencement of the entire line by the end of 2025.

According to the plan, Metro Line 5 will be approximately 39 kilometers long and comprise 21 stations. Of this, 6.5 kilometers will be underground, 2 kilometers elevated, and nearly 30 kilometers at ground level.

Line 5 will pass through central districts such as Ba Dinh, Dong Da, Cau Giay, and Nam Tu Liem, before extending to the districts of Hoai Duc, Quoc Oai, and Thach That. Notably, the line will directly connect to the Hoa Lac satellite city, which is envisioned to become a leading high-tech and educational hub in Northern Vietnam.

The project includes two depots for the assembly, maintenance, repair of trains, and other technical operations. Depot 1, located in Son Dong commune (Hoai Duc district), spans about 18 hectares. Depot 2, situated in Yen Binh commune (Thach That district), covers an area of approximately 6.9 hectares.

The required number of vehicles for each period is calculated to be 26 train sets by 2025, increasing to 37 by 2035 and 38 by 2050.

The formation of Line 5 will facilitate passenger connections and transfers with other urban railway lines, including Lines 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8, enabling convenient and rapid travel from the suburbs to the city center.

According to the master plan, by 2045, with a vision towards 2065, Hanoi is expected to have 15 urban railway lines with a total length of 617 kilometers.
