On the afternoon of June 12, the Ho Chi Minh City’s Commission for Propaganda and Mass Mobilization, and the Department of Culture and Sports held a press conference to address economic and social issues in the city.

Nguyen Le Tan, Deputy Head of the Energy Department, Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade, recommended that households using electricity from the 5th tier and above consider installing rooftop solar power.

At the press conference, Mr. Nguyen Le Tan, Deputy Head of the Energy Department of Ho Chi Minh City’s Department of Industry and Trade, shared that the average monthly electricity bill is one of the factors for households to consider when deciding to install rooftop solar power.

According to Mr. Tan, for households with suitable conditions, rooftop solar power installation is highly beneficial if they have the roof space and consume a significant amount of electricity.

Currently, the electricity consumption of 300 kWh and below falls under the 4th tier, with a price of 2,998 VND/kg. Households using electricity from the 5th tier and above are charged above 3,350 VND/kWh, making them ideal candidates for considering rooftop solar power installation.

“A quick calculation can be made; if a household consumes approximately 20 kWh per day, they should install about 4 kWp of solar power, which will generate an average of 12-18 kWh. If the household’s electricity usage is mainly during the evening, consider installing an additional storage battery for nighttime use,” shared Mr. Tan.

The representative from the Department of Industry and Trade also added that the investment cost for the aforementioned storage system varies depending on quality and ranges from 20 to 40 million VND per unit, suitable for households consuming around 20 kWh daily.

According to statistics from Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC), there are currently 13,985 rooftop solar power systems with signed power purchase agreements based on Decision No. 11/2017/QD-TTg and Decision No. 13/2020/QD-TTg. The total installed capacity is 349.65 MWp, including 453 systems with a capacity of 100 kWp and a total capacity of 220.69 Mwp.

A preliminary statistic shows that 559 investors have installed rooftop solar power systems with a total capacity of 48.55 MW, producing and consuming their electricity according to Decree No. 135/2024/ND-CP and Decree No. 58/2025/ND-CP.
